Thread of PC Woes, Troubles, Problems, and Issues

Whats the recommended brand when it comes to RAM? I would like to upgrade my wife's rig a bit but its still using 2 x 2GB Mushkins. There are still 2 open slots on the board so i figured i would upgrade it with another 2 x 4GB dimms.

I tend to buy one of 3 brands of memory. Corsair, Kingston or Samsung; I do have a but of a thing that I do in that I never mix brands/generations on the same channels. The reason for this is that mixing brands and sometimes even same brand different model/generation of RAM tends to have variances in timings which CAN result in weird performance issues and occasional BSODs.

Yeah, I second that. In terms of value memory, very good quality.

Sounds about right... :p

BeoTeK since I know you now have a Galax HOF version card, what does that black button on the back of the GPU do? The manual that comes with the GPU doesn't say at all. I Googled it, and it seems it increases the power available to the card as well as the fan speed. I'm not certain though and want to check.

I know somewhere on the forum I saw you mentioned the button and that it did something, but can't find that post again.

Hahaha, thanks bud. So it is essentially a Turbo button. Why they had to make it so big though, meh

Yeah, it's a bit of an eye sore, but who looks at the back of the computer eh. Also, makes it somewhat easier to find when you just using your feelers.

But I still feel like a turd for that, and still laugh about it whenevs I thinks aboot it.

My PC seems to have been getting a little slower lately (and somewhat noisier). I can constantly hear my HDD reading/writing. There's aren't any alerts in the event viewer, is there any recommended software one could use to determine this? (preferably free or open source)

So if you buy a Galax GPU from Wootware you get a Witcher 3 Digital Game Code as well, but only if you bought the GPU after 24 April 2015. When did I purchase mine? 21 April. FML

Hmmm... stick with an i5 3970 or change to i7 870 (aren't they different socket though?)?

Edit: just found an i7 2600 (not the k version)

Alrighty, got the wrong kit for my wife's pc and it still works with the old kit. Started memtest before I left for work this morning, so will have to check that this evening. The voltages look a bit funky though.

You sure it is an i5 3970 and not a 3570? Because I don't find anything about an i5 3970.

I have an i5 2500K (overclocked to 4.5Ghz) and it mops the floor with an i7 870 (my friend has one). This i5 won't overclock, however the tech in it is a few generations newer, so it will probably be faster. And yes, the i7 870 has a different socket to the i5 :)
Saying that, I think the i7 2600 would be the better bet in this case, unless you're going to use it for gaming only, then the i5 will be better I'd say.

Sorry, checked this morning, actually an i5 3470 (was going off the top of my mind previously).

I had a 2500k but I lost a die off of it and Intel refused to replace so had to buy another, hence the 3470.

Edit:
So it seems i5 3470 vs i7 2600 the difference is very marginal. I may as well stay with the Ivy over the Sandy?
Maybe The Joker can comment here or throw his opinion in the mix?

For gaming there won't be much difference between the two, however the i7 will be quite a bit faster in multi threaded applications. So if the price difference between the two is small, I'd say take the i7. The i7 has a higher stock clock than the i5 and bigger L3 cache.

Yes, agreed. The higher L3 and FPU is better, but slightly older tech and not to mention it doesn't support the higher memory speeds.

What motherboard do you have? Because even though the CPU only supports up to 1333MHz, if you have a P/Z67 or higher chipset, you can set the XMP profile in the BIOS so the memory can run at 1600/1866/2133 (depending on the frequency of the RAM itself of course).

Sorry for the late reply...been really busy.

i5 3470 no hyper threading, but can utilize pci e 3, if you have a Z77 motherboard.
i7 2600 will be faster in games that actually make use of hyper threading (Witcher 3, BF4 ect), that said its an old chip with no upgrade path, you'll be able to pop it in a Z77 board but it'll still only run pci e 2.0.

Gaming wise, they'll be on par and I doubt you would notice any difference between the 2 unless the game in question makes use of hyper threading.
