Thread of PC Woes, Troubles, Problems, and Issues

Ok we just installed a Radeon R9 270X into my pc - everything runs perfectly just Diablo 3. . . When I launch the game I get a black screen, music and the D3 cursor. I managed to change it from full screen to windowed mode which helped some people, but now I have a windowed D3, with a lovely grey screen. I have no idea how to fix it.

All other games runs with no issues.

That sucks Wyv
Remove and reinstall D3? :/

Recently my GPU drivers have started crashing whenever I play a game. My PC is fine in windows and when running other programs and such but as soon as I start playing a game the screen will flash black after a few minutes and most games will crash giving different errors depending on the game. Usually it has something to do with the GPU drivers not responding and restarting.

It started when I got Mad Max; I would play for less than 5 minutes before the game crashed. I then opened my case and found that my GPU was really full of dust leading me to believe it was a heat issue. I cleaned it out properly and sure enough I was able to play Mad Max for more than 30 hours without any issues, and all my other games worked fine as well. Then about 2 or 3 weeks ago I got a new mobo, CPU and RAM and since installing them I have been having non-stop issues playing games on my PC. I've tried a whole bunch of different drivers but the problems persist regardless. I used GPU Z to check what temperatures my card reaches and the highest it goes is about 80 degrees, which should still be fine as far as I know. No matter what game I play, it only lasts a few minutes before my screen flashes black and the game either continues or crashes. If it does continue the black screen crashes start happening more frequently and it makes playing pretty impossible.

As a last resort I installed MSI Afterburner and downclocked the GPU and boosted the GPU fan and that seems to work, although it really is not an ideal solution. As far as I can tell either my GPU is busy dying (or just needs better cooling/new thermal paste) or my power supply is not supplying enough juice for everything. I don't have a spare power supply to test it out properly and I'm scared if I decide to buy another GPU my issues will persist because the problem is not the GPU.

My specs are as follows:

i7 920 @ 2.67GHz
6GB Triple Channel RAM
Geforce GTX550TI
My PSU is 600W if I'm not mistaken

Anybody have any (other) ideas as to what could be causing my issues?

To check if it is indeed a temperature issue, maybe try better cooling. AKA open both sides of your case and put a fan next to your PC. I used to do this in summer in my flat at university, as my room got really hot and my PC suffered.
This should lower the temp in your case and give better airflow around the GPU. Monitor the GPU temp to see if it still goes to 80degC.

Edit: Also, don't do this: http://mygaming.co.za/forum/showthread.php/19320-Video-of-the-Day?p=1164804&viewfull=1#post1164804

Yeah, I thought of that and did actually put a fan next to my PC with the sides open and the games I tested it with still crashed with the fan on full blast. I didn't check the temperature on the GPU when I did though, maybe I should do that again and see what it says.

That's actually how I started thinking it could be a PSU system, since it was still crashing even with a fan directly next to my PC. Once downclocked it should use less juice as far as I'm aware and this could be why downclocking makes games playable.

Damn :/
With Afterburner you can have it log the values of your GPU. Just check if it konks at the same GPU temp each time. I had a GPU that used to restart my PC when it hit 81 degC (not sure if it was the GPU or PSU, but didn't have cash at the time to replace either).

Also if you have a friend close and willing, try his GPU to see if the problem persists?

I tested it now with Mad Max using the fan next to the case and it still goes up to 83 degrees. It did not crash however; worked fine for longer than it's ever done since the issue started.

Sadly all my friends have consoles only. I can use my brother's GPU though, but it is an even older GPU than mine since he does not play games on his PC. It won't be able to run the newer games or draw as much power as mine I reckon.
