How do you make an inserted image size smaller in a post?

You can alter the BBCode to look like this:

Resizing the image
[img=100x50]url for the image here[/img]

Then change the resolution to fit. Not sure if there is another way.
If you upload the image to Imgur, you can select Large Thumbnail and use the link provided to make the image fit.
