I have a client who lives on the top of that little koppie behind Clear water mall in Roodepoort, in what can only be described as an insanely expensive mansion and he has lost so many components to lightning its insane (Claimed 5 times this year), and we're talking huge claims 100k in electronics every couple of months. We've tried everything under the sun to stop it from happening only recently it stopped. He had a sort of lightning protection "kit" installed and that seems to have fixed it, mind you he spent a fortune on said "kit".

I'm a bit worried about my home and lightning protection. I installed a fireplace recently and the steel chimney extents about 1.5m above the highest point of the roof. I have no idea what would happen if lightning struck that chimney. I can only think it would run down straight into my lounge...

The power hasn't gone out yet... But, when the time comes to relax on my bed and watch things on my phone (due to LS), I sure hope I'm using my new earphones.

Thanks Kalahari. Appreciate it.

Wow, people can really pile on the work at the end of the year if they know you're going on vacation

What?! I'm not even going on leave and the work gets piled on.

Speaking of which, I put in leave for Monday (coming) and now they pushing me into working this weekend! WTF

Yeah i have insurance already phoned them and the lady just laughed and said she'll mail me forms they have had 43 claims already today. one was one of their own people who had bought one of these ne 65" Curved UHD tv's just saturday. It died 55K later :p and only 3 days old.

And no i actually stay next to the Delmas road and there is a huge open field next to my house Stagger. but i'm gonna outfit my whole house with surge protectors and see if that helps

Sheesh. That's a lot of claims. I stay in a similar area. I had a lightning strike less than 300m from my home. Immediately unplugged all electrical appliances. Naturally my media server decided to take extra long to shut down.

Get a mains surge protector for your DB board, I would suggest a DEHN Type 1 Combined Lightning Current and Surge Arrester. Your local neighborhood sparky should be able to install this under an hour.

we only have a surge protector plug in the pc room...we should probably get one for the lounge as well especially since we dont have insurance....
