It's absolute lunacy. I drive a GTI and recently got into a tussle with my gate, as a result I have a 2-3 cm scratch on my bumper. I've been told that VW have started using a new water based paint that panel beaters can't repair (something along the lines of it not blending properly). This means that they have to replace or repaint the entire bumper which has been quoted at about R4.5k. I think I need to sell my car and buy a bicycle.

Which is why my cars tend to be white these days. Not pearl white, not metallic white, just plain glossy white. My wife insisted that her car be metallic blue, much to my dismay. Actually almost all modern (in like the last couple of years) automotive paints are water based due to pollution and emission regulations. The body shop should run a spectrometer on your undamaged paint in order to mix the appropriate color while taking into account the weathering of the paint job and mix the custom color accordingly. If they don't have the equipment they will just replace the whole damn thing and paint it according to the manufacturer paint codes. Which will ultimately result in the new part being slightly mismatched from a color perspective as it does not take into account weathering (fading due to UV exposure) of the paint job. This is most noticeable on certain colors (red and black still being the biggest culprits)

A replacement fender fitted and sprayed shouldnt cost that much, my driver side quarter panel was driven into just over a year ago and it was about R9k to respray the entire driver side (you cant just spray the damaged area if its metallic) along with the panel repair on my a3.

Yup, metallics is virtually impossible to correctly match. My Ford i had was "Tuxedo Black" which is metallic black and every damn nick and scratch showed immediately. When I dinged it they had to almost respray the entire car as they could not get the old panels to match up with the newly painted panels ,etc. Insurance pretty much were on the verge of scrapping the car just because the paint job was 3x the costs of parts and labor (to install the parts).

Technology has not advanced far enough for a machine to more-or-less detect an accurate colour. I know, lighting would play a big role in this.

Uhm, the paint shops that have spectrometers actually do a pretty decent paint matching job. The tech is there (wavelength analysis), but we're in Africa so there are only a handful of places using it.

That's what I thought. There's no way I should be paying that much. These people are obviously con artists.

Right... so, because my old Logitech G400s "can't be repaired", my account was credited and I was able to buy my dream mouse:

Hi all

I have been quiet the last week unfortunately because work has been insane. I hope next week is better but somehow I doubt it. I need a break :/

I bought the same mouse a few weeks ago, it is really great! Took my hand a bit to get used to the slimmer profile compared to my previous mouse, but is really comfortable and all around awesome! Hope you enjoy it as much as I have H :)

Something that I found interesting though, is that when they phoned me yesterday, they told me that my account would be credited the amount that the mouse cost me (R336). Now, the price of a G400s on their site is R411, so that would not cover the cost (effectively I'd be losing money in this replacement process). However, I'd noticed that I was credited enough to actually buy a replacement, which is why I took the liberty of instead buying this mouse, as I really did want it for a while. :)
