Our town has now reached hour 45 of no electricity after the lightning hit. The water supply has dried up 12 hours after the power went down. Rumours that the water would be restored today proved false, so the local high school offered their borehole to any residents who could bring their own containers.
Vodacom was the first cell network to go down 16 hours after the outage. Telkom mobile and Cell C followed within an hour after that. MTN stayed on the air the whole time but their service is so bad under normal circumstances, it almost doesn't matter. I am surprised that the ADSL is still functioning. I don't think it will for much longer...

I went to a shop this afternoon to buy my daughter an ice cream. They only have enough generating power to keep two fridges going. I could smell the rotting vegetables through the closed doors marked "Staff Only". There was no ice cream. Or bottled water.

The petrol stations are still functioning through something akin to cannibalism: They run the pumps from a generator which they fuel from the pumps themselves. I produced my card. The attendant sighed and pointed me to line of waiting customers. Many transactions are being rejected because the cell networks failed. Drawing cash is out of the question since no ATMs have standby power. Everybody wants fuel for their generators and their cars. They also know that everybody else wants fuel so they want to get there first. And they buy a little extra, just in case. The stations will run dry before the delivery trucks arrive. We all know that. So we buy a little extra...

Police and community group cars are now patrolling the streets every night from dusk until dawn. Alarms and electric fences are useless; batteries dead after 24 hours.

Reports say we still have 96 hours to go.
God help us...
 
Yeah, ok. A bit melodramatic, I know, but I didn't tell a single lie. It's like a dry run right now for if (when?) Eskom goes tits up. I had to bathe myself from a bucket this morning and I'm feeling sticky :(
Thing is, in a small town, things go to shit much faster than in the city. City can still cope for a week or two. Small town, 72 hours and the excrement hits the rotors.
 
I've just been watching anime all day, also on a completely unrelated note, go on youtube and search "ievan polka hitler" it's a good laugh

Not that strange that it didn't make the news. It only gets newsworthy after about a week. Parys was without power for 3 weeks a while back and that was only mentioned in passing.

Water is back, at least. Heard a rumour power may be back this afternoon. I'll need to service my gennie after this.

Dam that is hectic mate hopefully now you will make a plan for next time. Perhaps like more water container you probable already have a gas stove and what not.

I'm getting a 5000liter Jojo tank before the end of the year. Next year I want to go off grid with some rooms in the house. Painting the house can wait.
