Thanks! I must maybe wait for all the posts to come in before I reply. :)

:D

or the Kia Picanto which is the same as the i10 and probably a lil cheaper too

I prefer the Hyundai for the massive warranty.. And a Picanto rear-ended me once, and since them I have just not liked those cars! :D The other Kia's I like, just not the Picanto.

I suppose, if I ignore my victim-mentality bias, that taking a test drive will be worth it, and then just thoroughly compare the warranty and service plans.

Welcome to the cool kids table, Noob.....lol

Solitude, it's sad and everything, but at least you now have an answer about the car and can start looking at something else. The i10 is a nice little car. I'd also say look at the VW Up, it's a really cute little car

I have no numbers to back it up, but I've got a feeling that the Up will get stolen easily. The Polo is still one of the most stolen cars, and the Up doesn't really do much to prevent that from happening too. Other than that, yeah, really nice little car, definitely worth a look.

If she wants to shop around, there's also the Ford Fugo (my Mom and Grandmother are both happy with their's), the Honda Brio (Don't know anyone with one, but it's hard to imagine Honda shitting the bed), the Toyota Atos (not a fan, but haven't heard horrible things), the Audi A1 (overpriced for the market segment, IMO) and the Renault (Dacia) Sandero to look at. Get yourself the new issue of Car or Top Gear to leaf through on your day off, and show her the pictures.

Just stay away from the Datsun Go, (that thing is pretty dangerous), the Chevy Spark (drives awfully to me, the pedals are hanging way up in the air) and the Tata family, for reasons you should be very familiar with.

Thanks for all the info! I think she likes the Ford Figo. Will copy and paste all those car names now.

i would also not touch the Figo as it is built in India and i saw a youtube crash test comparison between the figo built in india and one built somewhere else and it was shocking.

+1 for everything said here. I share all these opinions about the compact car market segment. Personally, I would probably go for either the UP! or the Ford Figo. Those little Figo's are really nice cars, and you should be able to find some decent deals on second hand models as well. The UP! is a bit too new to really get a lot of second hand options I think. Also, from that list I believe those should be the cheapest to maintain and live with.

I remember the issue you're referring too, but it was a difference between the Figo sold in India and elsewhere. (All Figo's are built in India) The legal minimum for safety is a lot lower in India, so the first Gen Figo's were sold with no airbag, which is an automatic (IIRC) zero on the NCAP rating. The one's sold in SA did just fine. Interestingly, the same test where the Figo was shown to be unsafe was done on the Indian sold (airbagless) VW Polo, and it performed nearly identically. Add airbags, and it did just fine.

It's similar min/maxing that lead to the Datsun Go being relatively unsafe. It's design for an Indian market, and so the bare minimum is done. The one sold locally is better than the Indian model, but not by much.

All that said, if you feel unsafe in any vehicle, don't get in it. I'd much prefer someone feeling okay and a bit more broke in a Honda than feeling anxious in a Ford - anxiety and fear on the road can be really, really dangerous.

I generally refer to the kinsey report to get an idea on "cheapness" VW traditionally has low regular service costs, but irregular parts like say a wiper blade arm can be 3x mire than their closest competitor. Also keep in mind the commonly replaced accident damaged parts and their cost. The nett result can mean (very common Honda issue btw) that a moderate ding would equal a complete write off (uneconomical to repair)

In the small city car arena I think the Kia Rio and Renault Sandero actually score pretty well in the service and related maintenance and repair costs areas.

Am I the only one that noticed this during this whole discussion? Did Toyota and Hyundai somehow join forces and start selling Toyundais or Hyotas?

I'm not sure what exactly you mean by this, but the Atos, the i10, and one of the French manufacturers (I think Peugeot) do share the engine design and maybe even other parts in front of the A-pillar.

I know Hyundai and Kia build in the same assembly line and share lots of parts, but Toyota and Hyundai?

I bolded and sized up the confusing make/model in my quote: Toyota... Atos. It was meant in jest with buckets of sarcasm.

I'm sure you meant to say Toyota Aygo, right? Or Hyundai Atos? Or even Toyota Etios?

Nope, it's Toyota and Diahatsu that have a platform/engine sharing deal. Also Toyota has a platform/manufacturing deal with Peugeot and Citroën. To be perfectly honest, Toyota cars have completely started missing the plot. Their vehicles are overpriced, have very little features compared to their competitors and their service and maintenance plans are stuck in the 90s.

To further hammer this point about cars. Take the Datsun Go 1.2 Lux, Nissan Micra 1.2 Visia, VW Polo Vivo 1.4 Trendline Hatch, Ford Figo 1.4 Trend, Suzuki Swift 1.2 GL, VW Move Up 1.0, Toyota Etios 1.5 XS, Kia Picanto 1.2 EX, Hyundai i10 1.1 Motion, Honda Brio 1.2 Comfort and Chevrolet Spark 1.2 LS.

From a Minor Service type perspective the cheapest 3 are (in order) : Ford Figo, Nissan Micra and Chevrolet Spark
The most expensive Minor Service : Hyundai, Kia and Toyota

Major Service / Wear and tear parts cheap three : Datsun, Nissan and Ford
Major Service / Wear and tear parts expensive three : Honda, Hyundai and Toyota

Common accident damaged parts (cheap 3) : Datsun, Nissan, VW
Common accident damaged parts (expensive 3) : Chevrolet, Honda and Hyundai

In a nutshell, get the Ford Figo or a VW Polo, avoid the UP. For some reason the UP has some stupid expensive parts in it.

Example of stupidity on Up : Spark Plug - R 140 EACH, Rear brake pads - R 1000+, Clutch plate - R 2000, Flywheel - R 3300

You can do all 4 brake pads on the Ford for the cost of just doing the rear on the Up, the clutch plate and pressure plate on the Ford is a kit you buy together for less than just the clutch plate on the Up.

It's the little things. However the one thing about the Ford is that the Figo uses a tyre size that is stupid hard to find and you don't have plenty of manufacturer options.
