Three Weeks Later, DriveClub Still Doesn't Work Properly

On October 7, Sony released the racing game Driveclub for PlayStation 4. Today, October 28, the game still doesn’t work as intended — and Sony still hasn’t said a word about refunding the folks who paid $US60 for it.

Driveclub‘s server problems have been well-documented. For the past three weeks, players have found themselves unable to access many of the racing game’s features; although Driveclub does have an offline mode, its biggest selling points involve connecting with and racing against other players, fighting for ranks as you try to climb the game’s various social leaderboards. Multiplayer is even in the name — Driveclub refers to the clubs you can form to play with other people.

So for 21 days now, the game has been essentially crippled.

Though Sony has been issuing regular updates to try to fix Driveclub‘s server issues, they’re still not out of the woods yet. (Representatives for Sony did not respond when I asked them about potential refunds.)

Just this morning, I asked Fahey to log into the game and see what was up. Here’s the message he got:

Im just so surprised at how long its taken, and taking, them to fix it... Its not even like the game is getting the numbers other games have gotten in the past...

alot of internal rumour and speculation is that sony pushed (or Forced) evolution to get the game out before the holiday season and to have it compete with forza horizon 2 , that plan didnt work as beautifully as expected as we can see

I dont know where you heard that but try and keep Fh2 out of a Driveclub thread it is painfully obvious what you are trying to do.

Last I checked, you are allowed to have an opinion.

I dont have a problem with people having opinions but I would like to know how he came up with that speculation if Sony wanted them to release it would of happend last year why delay it a year and then demand the release I dont get that.

I'm really enjoying this game. My brother and I started our club and we have been playing without any issues since I got it on Wednesday. The visuals and sound in this game are really, really impressive.

It was taking too long to hit the shelves "whistling:

Glad to hear someone is having a positive experience...

Whether DriveClub’s derailment is the fault of the developer underestimating the potential server strain or Sony’s insufficient infrastructure is up for debate. Nevertheless, the potential repercussions this could have on Evolution’s long-term reputation is worrying - especially when you look at the depressing number of UK racing studios that have been shut down in the past after their new IPs fell apart. It’s equally embarrassing for Sony, too - I suspect they now regret branding DriveClub as a “Forza killer” in their promotions.

Displaying it on a trailer for the sake of throwing a jab at a competitor makes things even worse and definitely doesn’t make the trailer look better. As a matter of fact, the bright green and blue cars used to represent the Xbox One and the PS4 look remarkably worse and more toy-like than the rest of the rides shown in the trailer, sporting much nicer liveries and less jarring colors. Ultimately, this kind of stunt, most probably coming straight from the desk of some overeager marketer that has never written a line of code in his life and thought he had a brilliant idea, demeans the years of work gone in developing both games involved, re-purposing innovation, technological prowess and effort beyond the call of duty into cheap marketing ammunition.

From the same article
It’s a genuine shame these issues are detracting from DriveClub’s achievements. Server-issues aside, DriveClub is a solid, underrated racing game that doesn’t deserve all the flack thrown at it. It’s not perfect by any means - it lacks a true identity (I’ll go into more detail in our upcoming full review) and has aforementioned AI issues, not to mention the infuriating penalty system that saps some of the fun.

From a technical standpoint, however, DriveClub is a triumph, even in its current barebones state. It looks stunning, sounds sublime and has a fun and accessible, yet deep and rewarding handling model reminiscent of the Project Gotham Racing series, that also works wonderfully well with the Thrustmaster T300 wheel. In fact, it’s the only racer on PS4 that works with a wheel at all right now.
If only you where as unbiased as this article.

Who cares about all this marketing bullshit? This is the same to me as these pointless resolution and framerate discussions/arguments. I only care about the game and as far as I'm concerned there is nothing wrong Dricevlub. It looks beautiful, sounds awesome and the cars handle like a dream and I have had no issues with connecting to the server, I have even played a few MP rounds no problem.

@XbatousaiX What is your PSN name. I think I have you as a PSN friend and I just wanna make sure who is who when I look at the leaderboard times.

It's really sad the flak that this title is getting. I've had it from launch and have had nothing but good things to say. I think I've also inspired others on this forum to get it. Yet it's sad to see that everyone harks on about the negativity. Yes sure there have been connectivity issues, I wasn't even able to connect up until last week. But this isn't the first game to launch like this. Have a look at GTA and it's online functionality when it launched.

Welcome to gaming in 2014. Release now, fix later.

I really think you need to stop now. Nothing that DOHC-WP said in this thread struck me as unreasonable. You're coming across as a massive douche.

People absolutely should harp on about the connectivity issues, even if the underlying game is good. This is a consumer issue and we need to stop with this attitude of just accepting it. It's unacceptable and inexcusable. If we don't keep the pressure up on this kind of thing, it's just going to keep happening.

I want to play and enjoy good games too. But I also want them to work properly from day one.

Yup. One of the main reasons I bought it instead of waiting for the plus edition was because of the good things you and others have said about it. I know you guys are huge fans of Forza, Gran Turismo, etc. so I knew you know what you are talking about and you were right. I'm not the biggest racing game fan (dislike Forza and GT) and I am loving Driveclub.
