Time was a cruel mistress to these 15 games

Use the word aesthetics rather than graphics. :)

Aesthetics being the creative choices about how the game looks, which includes everything from character models, environment to the UI. Graphics being the technical capability of a game.

Good graphics gives the designers more tools to work with in creating the aesthetics of a game, doesn't mean they'll know how to use those tools properly.

Actually, while "aesthetics" isn't entirely wrong, "art direction" is the better phrase in the context of game design and development.

Ragging on Half-Life I can handle, but the slight against System Shock 2 I cannot abide.

For stomping over my childhood dreams you must be burned!

LFG 4 Azi run. Need 2 tanks and DPS.

(I was torn between thanking you for thinking of System Shock 2, or firebombing you for it. GladOS gets all the love nowadays when Shodan is over 9000 times cooler. Anyway, in the end, being the violent male gamer stereotype I am, flaming won out.)

^___^

Aesthetics implies more than just art, it implies how things are arranged, how you work with light and shadows, what you show and what you don't, all sorts of things.

Not entirely. While I hate to use this example, half (or more like three quarters) of the fun of Crysis was in the graphics. Without those good graphics, the game would have been just another generic shooter. Instead, the amazing graphics distracted people from the shallow game underneath.

Not that I actually really liked Crysis, but it's the easiest example.

Was funny to see where Elder Scrolls came from (since Skyrim is my first Elder Scrolls game).

I think the next article should be games that did age well... My vote would go to Star Control 2 on that one.

Are you seriously turning this into some sort of stupid one-up argument? I simply explained what art direction is, because it's exactly what you were describing.

Jeez.

omg Descent. That was pure win. Descent 2 more so. Lived the idea that there isn't a particular direction that is "up". Tunnels all the way.

Looking back without the rose-tinted lenses

I'd like to see anyone here go with c++ and write a engine from scratch* to do that some of these games did. Then we can talk about "poo graphics" ;)

*No fun if you cheat and use libs or existing code.

As hideous as some of these titles are... they started the ripple bringing us what we have today. How would you like your fancy game without polygons? Lets go back to that sprite and side scroll and see how you like your skyrim then :D

Rage looks pretty but are much more a piece of shit compared to unreal 1. Just because we are the cool kids with the cool graphics doesn't mean it is all better. Day 1 fail is the big thing, wasn't so much so back then.

Huh, I was simply stating that upon reading your link and re-watching that episode I saw that Aesthetics included more than just the visuals, hence agreeing that art direction is a better description.

You should probably not get to agro over everything.

That really didn't come across at all.

I'm not "agro".

Yo! Deus Ex was great!

Surprised none of the Larry, Space Quest, Hero's Quest, Police Quest made it onto the list

and what about Starcraft and Warcraft - by today's standards they look terrible - but the gameplay, ah the gameplay

some lols though - Doom actually made me jump in those days

Wacraft 2, I would so play that game again if they updated the visuals slightly and redid the UI and controls. That game was epic. :)

Wow, it is scary but yeah that's how time ages games, go look at Tomb Raider now and it's like were her boobs always that triangular

On the topic of the scary games, if Slender has shown us anything, you don't need good graphics to scare the shit out of you

Yep, I wouldn't be surprised if CoD still had some Quake code in it.
