Titanfall beta ropes in 2 million unique players

The Titanfall beta on Xbox One and PC last week attracted 2 million unique players, Respawn Community Manager Abbie Heppe told Polygon.

Engineer Jon Shiring said in the same interview that Titanfall is completely reliant on the new Xbox Live Compute platform, Microsoft's cloud and scalability service: "If it's down, nobody can play." Titanfall did go dark for seven hours during the beta, as the team attempted to scale up the game for more players. Shiring called that one "human error."

"People need to understand that when you write a whole bunch of new code, there's bugs in it," he said. "We have to find those bugs. That was the goal of the beta. We know it's not going to work right. We don't want to find out on launch day. Let's find out now. We found probably 10 real things that we worked on and fixed. That's 10 things we don't have to find on launch day. We still might find some new things on launch day, but at least those ones are not there anymore."

We tried our best to master mech mechanics in the Titanfall beta last week, live and on-air, and our most memorable moments are saved for all eternity in this Joystiq Tiny Stream.

Well the launch can't be worse than Bf4, thats a new low.

I must say, I got to play it for 2 days in the end and I didn't find any bugs.

I found one bug where I managed to get myself stuck in a wall. Couldn't get out. But other than that nothing really.

Actual lost some taste for this game after the BETA. I found the maps too small and the forced AI exploited. I'll stick to BF.

Well it is only like 6 vs 6 so too huge maps would make it boring probably.

Have you encountered any major issues with BF yet?

That is kind of my issue with it to be honest. It's too small even while they attempt to create the illusion of scale. It's novel to me, but definitely not a day one buy for me anymore.

BF4 Major Issues? Nah, other issues, countless.

However. BF4 has 64 unique players simultaneously doing a variety of tasks from, which needs a breakdown to emphasize value:

  • Driving a variety of 10 different land vehicles per map, each with a unique 6 factor load out per player who enters it
  • Flying a variety of 8 different choppers/jets each with at least a 4 factor loadout for every player who gets in it
  • Repairing
  • Reviving
  • Healing
  • Resupplying
  • Using one of 37 different items, be it an automatic MP-APS that stop any explosive round/device from any of the 64 players no matter where they are to a claymore that will stay where it's placed even as the server can handle and maintain the location of 300+ traps per server.
  • Each player Firing 1 of 15 unique Assault Rifles
  • 1 of 11 unique Carbines
  • 1 of 9 unique Shotguns
  • 1 of 11 unique Light Machine Guns
  • 1 of 11 unique Personal Defense Weapons
  • 1 of 8 unique Designated Marksman Rifles
  • 1 of 11 unique Sniper Rifles
  • 1 of 13 unique Pistols
  • Taking dogtags unique to every player on the server with 1 of 7 unique knives.
  • Throwing 1 of 7 unique grenades
  • Each gun being unique in 5 different statistically fields
  • Brandished with 4 unique groups of a plethora of different attachments and camos making it unique to every single one of the 64 players.
  • All this with objectives which retain state and flow
  • Swaying trees
  • "Volumetric", synced water
  • Grass that burns with the wind.
  • World alterations caused by players like completely destructible buildings, trees, terrain
  • This among every thing else we take for granted like kills, tallied stats, ticket counts. Respawns, vehicle respawn etc. etc. etc.

... And we bitch about a hit marker.

Yeah, Titanfall loses it's flavour easily when I get into a round of BF.

Can't wait to get ADSL installed so I can jam BF4 on PC, really enjoyed BF3 on Xbox and PC although the difference between the two platforms was night and day.
