To Moody - Question about Steam

A lot of new games on steam cost the same as retail, which is way overpriced. If you ask me their double dipping. If I have to download a game, make a hard backup and use my bandwidth I expect a discount. The way I see it I am paying for their retail and distribution costs. For these reasons (and our crap internet connection) I will never buy of steam.

That has to do with publishers and retailers. Steam and others are contractually obliged to offer the same price as the physical retailer for a specific period. If publishers don't do this then physical retailers refuse to carry their games. That's why you find new games costing the same price across the board at the us retailers and the digital distro's.

lol, poor guy must be talking out of his arse according to some here

Valve Talks Steam Growth

Valve announced that the company had "extraordinary" growth for the Steam service during 2009. "During the last calendar year the platform surpassed 25 million active accounts, up 25% from the prior year," reveals Valve. "Of the 25 million accounts, over 10 million of those have profiles in the Steam Community."

"In addition to the millions of new accounts created during the year, the peak number of concurrent users eclipsed the 2.5 million mark during the month of December, pushing Steam's average monthly player minutes to more than 13 billion. Meanwhile, Steam now offers over 1,000 games from over 100 developers and publishers around the world. Unit sales for 2009 increased by more than 205%, marking the fifth straight year the platform has realized over 100% year-over-year growth in unit sales."

MooDy you dont really need to entertain Etiko with his questions he is trolling for a reaction I should know I am one too. What Etiko neglected to see from the link I posted is that is that the sales for newly released games on steam haven't increase substantially since steam was introduced. The only area were they did experience a 400% increase was with older games.

Fuck you. As I have stated numerous times before in this thread, I am geniunly interested in this topic.

I am not trolling. And Moody has been helpful thus far in offering me the opinion of a gameshop owner.

You on the other hand have been an douche bag of note. I think I shall ignore you in the future.

That link and quote shows growth in steam which we have already established, but it does not show any prove that digital downloads are taking away from physical media sales. And even with that growth physical media still out sells digital media by a very very large margin.

Ah you see, I am guessing by that friendly reaction I hit a nerve of some sort. If you were genuinely interested in this topic you would have done at least a bit of research into the topic. And found that digital media still has a very long way to go.

You smelled blood, he is a "soft target" since he is a store owner he cant really engage you in anyway because he runs a well known store. I on the other hand have no issues doing so.

You on the other hand have been an douche bag of note. I think I shall ignore you in the future.

I am flattered but for future reference that's Mr Douche bag to you sir. ;)

Moody, I'm also interested actually. Are you guys worried about this? Or are you not allowed to comment on this issue?

He did answer it pretty well a couple of posts back:

Obviously no business wants to lose even 1% of there sales - but I think if you are really intersted in this then maybe get in touch with one of the larger gaming retailers who may have analysts on their pay roll - I'm sure that some of them must have looked into this.
Also it might be worth looking at how many people actualy have inet in SA and then of those how many actualy have a good enough line to fully use Steam and what are the projected figures of the isps of South Africans who will have steam friendly inet over the next 5/10 years - I'm sure that you can google this.

Yes, sorry about that, after posting i realised there was five pages worth of thread here, not one so i deleted my post. My bad. Just woke up :)

As a side, why does every thread with you involved end up in name calling larch? Etiko asked a fair question so why call him a troll? It was interesting to read moody's answer and get a feel for the local retail scene's feeling about steam. How is she a "soft target"? She is here representing ZAPS and this question was related to the store, she is perfectly capable of answering or not answering in whatever manner she sees fit.

You must be really naive to think his line of questioning was not trolling I can gladly point out the facts for you regarding this.

You just answered your own question it should be apparent what I meant now if not well your problem I guess.

ummm evolution is a lie ;)

You seem a bit confused evolution would be from floppy to stiffy to CD to DVD and now Blu-ray. Digital is not a evolution from physical medial. It is a whole new way of getting a game thus not evolution but progression.
