Square Enix boss Darrell Gallagher says milestone will be reached by the end of the month; game has now "exceeded profit expectations."

Though Crystal Dynamics' March 2013 Tomb Raider reboot failed to reach its initial sales targets, that's no longer the case, Square Enix boss Darrell Gallagher said in a blog post on the game's website.

"By the end of this month we will surpass 6 million units for our Tomb Raider reboot, and, having achieved profitability back in 2013, Tomb Raider has exceeded profit expectations and continues to make significant contributions to our overall financial performance," Gallagher said.

3.4 million of Tomb Raider's 6 million sales came during its record-setting launch month alone. The bulk of a game's sales typically come in the first month, but strong sales in the months following seems to prove the franchise has legs. Some steep discounts and a re-release for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 couldn't have hurt, either.

A new Tomb Raider is currently in development for Xbox One and PS4, though details on this project have not been disclosed outside of the game being "well into development."

"We can't wait to continue our adventures with Lara in the sequel that is in development at Crystal Dynamics," Gallagher said. "We are also looking forward to building on the success and lessons learned from the reboot to continue redefining and setting new benchmarks for Tomb Raider in the years to come."

Yay for Lara!

Finally, Probably my favourite game of last year, actually one of my favourite games ever. I'm a fan of the Tomb Raider series and I think this reboot did it justice.

Excellent news! Happy to hear this and hope it results in a sequel of the same if better quality.

Great see a great game getting the returns it deserves. Hopefully it gets thrown into another great TR

Lol, I was shocked when I heard that the game had sold 3.4 million units in the first month and the company executives where disappointed with the sales figures.

Good news, this shows that people are more willing to buy the game later on if it is actually a good quality product.

Yeah and I'm sure good word-of-mouth helped a lot. A lot of people were turned off by the franchise by the time Underworld released and may have been hesitant to give this one a go upon launch.

I genuinely think that the news of this may help shift the focus of investors from seeking immediate returns or bust, to perhaps considering waiting it out until the product begins paying for itself eventually.

Playing this on PS4 and loving every bit. Just not getting enough game time. Already looking forward to the next instalment of this.
