Toyota Yaris Putting in some sound...

Hey everyone,

I want to put some decent sound in my friends Yaris as a christmas present. He has completely stock sound so far. I personally think it is alright quality. Just very quiet. If i understand correctly, it could be much louder with the help of an amp without having to get different speakers and without getting distortion. Also, his bass is crap so I want to stick in a Sub. But I know NOTHING about car sound. What would who recommend? Anyone got a Yaris that they have already put sound in? My budget is about 1k but I could stick a bit more in if necessary, I'm not adverse to buying second hand and I can do all wiring etc myself. Should I put the Sub in a box in the back or install it into the boot cover thing?

His dash is also stock, and don't want to have to shell out for a faceplate or anything either...

We are taking a road trip in his car this december so I need to do this before then.

Also, I wanna do the same with my Hyundai, but that isn't urgent.

When getting the Sub, for a Yaris have it installed into a box for the best output on bass. I would also suggest installing 2 6X9 on the backboard and ja get a standard 4port 1200watt amp, Starsound is decent and with your 6X9 my suggestion is to go for Sony. It's nothing over the top and you get your moneys worth :D

The stock speakers in the Yaris are not that great, I'm sure they are some unknown brand with low wattage ratings. My fiance had a Yaris, and I remember the sound was okay.

Most importantly: Does he have the standard built-in Yaris frontloader? If so, I don;t think it has an amp line output. There are ways you can use the speaker cable to connect to the amp, but then you need a "line filter" (something like this) to basically get the sound back to a line output sound in stead of a radio-amplified signal sound. Then you can put these into a 4 channel amp or something... (I know exactly what is going on here, but don;t know the correct terms :))

So I would say, based on the fact that the frontloader is distorting the speakers, that the speakers are being over-powered by the head unit. This would mean that new, better speakers would be able to play louder without distorting (and be clearer if a better brand).

Adding an amp may not be required, especially since you;re gonna spend the full R1k on the amp, and then overpower the shit speakers even more. And then adding a sub would need another amp, lots of cabling and stuff to be done..

Jesus,. pardon my techno burp here, but let me put in this format. I would:

Replace 4 x 5 1/4" OR 6" speakers in front and rear doors - R600
(2 sets of Kenwoods) - Example

Replace 4 x tweeters in front and rear doors - R200
(2 sets of JBL)Example

OR alternatively, if these are split systems, you can buy split systems in the correct sizes that you need from most shops.

Hope this helps...

I would also recommend a high end Frontloader unit.

The Radio Tape Master 5000 with Super X BASS

and an all in one backboard solution.

This will Make your Cortina XR6 Pimping

Replace the front speakers with some quality splits
Put 8-inch landmines in the rear doors for some bass (if they'll fit)
Get a decent 4-channel amp
?????
PROFIT!!

wouldnt it be wise to use a custom backboard for the 6x9's thus if he ever wants to return the car to stock form before selling he can just pop in the original hole less backboard.

@TBlaar, I think you missunderstood, I meant that the speakers had much more in them. They are very quiet at full volume and if I used an amp, i'm sure I could push much more out of them :)

Okay... So from all of this, i can conclude that I need the following at least:

AMP: any 4 channel amp, eg. http://www.autostyle.co.za/product/1099/Blaster1600w4ch/ (cheapest 4 channel I could find on this site)

SUB in a BOX: eg. http://www.autostyle.co.za/product/16915/Starsound101000wattSubwooferwithportedEnclosure/ or http://www.autostyle.co.za/product/21763/Targa121200wSVCSubwooferwith12NormalEnclosure/

Splits for front: eg. http://www.autostyle.co.za/product/11858/StarSound6SplitSystem/ (is this R450 for two? four? or each?)

Q: What the hell are splits? and landmines? can I use just this, http://www.autostyle.co.za/product/16934/Starsound6.53waySplitSystem/ an amp and a sub?

dont buy from autostyle rather buy from hifi corp cause most of them can also do fitting of the components on site

Really? cool :) bet they are slightly cheaper too :)

I found a Calibra Stealth 1800w 4ch amp and 12" 500w Starsound Sub for only R1k. Then I must still buildabox :/ but sounds good to me. Thoughts?

Landmines is a cool way of referring to powerful 8-inch speakers, which depending on how you configure the frequency crossover on the amp, can provide very good punchy bass.

I think the problem here is that your head unit does not have line outs, which basically connect your amp to your head unit.

Does he have a Yaris with the standard speakers? My fiance's Yaris we could never play at loud volumes, it got really loud and distorted. You may have another problem on your hands...

cool stuff :P well, I went out and got another job earlier. I have been JAUS (Just another unemployed student) for too long. Now I can start affording more. So I'm gonna need to buy another head unit (x2 (one for my car)) aswell :/ But my Hyundai at least has NICE sound. Just need a pumping sub in there. They didn't skimp on sound in the 1995-99 Sonatas. But I seriously need a sub in there. Okay. So, will any R300 head unit from makro do or does it have to be decent?

Decided that I can not afford to pump the Yaris full of sound. Too much. Now it is just my sonata. Thank you all for your help,

Finally, is this good for me?
double Pioneer 12" 1000W Subs in a box for R1k
Audiobank 4ch 1800W amp for R750
any head unit for like R300 from Hificorp etc?
