Trip Down Memory Lane

Well this is my memory lane of how I got started into gaming.....

I was about 10 years old when I used to go every weekend to my cousin to go play games. At the time, Pentium 4's were not even released. He had an awesome Sega as well as a PC. Naturally I was attracted to the console much more than the PC as I had TV games as well and it just felt better at the time....that sonic game was played for hours on end. Usually my cousin was the one playing PC while I had to sit and watch by his side for hours on end....thus I would rather revert back to the console so I could game as well.

Eventually one day he had to go somewhere and I started playing on his PC. Mortal Kombat was the name of the game. I did have this game on my TV games at home, but obviously the graphics of the blood wasn't as awesome as on PC. I played for quite a few hours, "button-mashing" on his keyboard, even "rage-bashing" his keyboard at times at the stupid AI not giving me a chance to get to the BOSS :)

So the era of the Pentium 4 arrived after they stole his PC...

For a while we played Deus Ex and Project IGI.....I remember him telling me about Diablo 2....he called it "The BEST game in the world". I searched high and low for this game, phoning everyone I know to get a hold of this game. Finally my one friend said yes, his dad bought the game, but his dad won't lend it to us. Feeling all sick inside about his answer, we made a plan to copy the discs when his dad went out one afternoon.....that didn't happen quite as we planned so we just went out and bought the game :) We played it for hours on end. Needles to say, he played for hours on end, and I just managed his health and mana potions for him. Yes, I pressed the buttons 1 through 4 on the keyboard hours on end while "we" played the game.

On to my very own AMD dual core PC...

So this one night, at the age of 13, my school had a Bingo night. I came home that evening after winning a few prizes, yes I am THAT good :P. I walked into my room with my lights off, just put down the winnings and walked out again. I did notice my room has been shuffled around, but I chose to ignore it. As I go in to chat with my dad, he told me: "You don't even say thank you? Maybe I should take it back". I ran into my room only to see a 15" monitor, dual core AMD PC with a Riva TNT2 inside. I stayed up all night playing a card game that is turn based....cant remember the name. I also messed around with some themes on windows xp and then I messed up my PC on the first night. Luckily I got a Windows XP original cd with the PC, so a simple installation of windows xp at 2am in the morning was quite exciting for me. I got Diablo 2 as I wanted to once play the game by myself and actually finish the game on my own. A few years past with a few good and bad games.

So the era of Counter Strike happened...

One vacation me and my family went to Hartenbos for 2 weeks. Everyday I went to the internet shop to play this awesome shooter game with a few guys at the shop. I got shot in the face countless times. I got Counter Strike 1.6 as soon as I could when I got home. No internet meant playing with bots. Me and my friends in high school thought we were the best in CS1.6 as we could own millllllions of bots. After a while Counter Strike Source came out and my parents bought this for me. We did not have adsl yet so this meant once again playing against bots. Same thing over and over we owned the bots. Thinking we were still the best we went to the big Lans of LAN2K and OC. We got owned like there was no tomorrow. Some of our friends left gaming while others left CSS for Dota.

ADSL happened...

Finally my parents got ADSL and I could finally play Counter Strike Source online. Got owned in the beginning but got better everyday. I played for hours, even on school nights until 1am and 2am. I played on the GoBlam servers when they were active and made about R4000. My dad did not believe me until he had to sign a form that I may play and they may pay the cash into my bank account. I played CSS until the end of grade 12.

Varsity happened.....as well as xbox 360 and wii.....

So back to no adsl except on weekends, I struggled to keep form on CSS. I then finally got a wii to play around with. Believe me, when you are awake at 1am in the morning and nothing to do, Mario and Sonic at the Olympic games is a lot of fun. We played Wii for about a year and we got Fifa on the wii. Being both Football fanatics me and my flatmate, we got Fifa on the PC as well but only played career mode.

My second year of Varsity I decided I would finally get an xbox. Initially it was to learn how to modify the xbox, but then I rather bought Fifa 10 and started playing that. Some of my flatmate's buddies in our complex also had an xbox with Fifa and we started jamming together. I played online on weekends. Playing Fifa with a comfortable remote like the xbox, this was the most fun we had.

Third year of varsity we moved next to our buddies who played Fifa 10 with us and we started having tournaments each week for the fun of it and bragging rights.

Fourth year of varsity we held tournaments each week where you could win a cup and everything as well as about R120 for a nice Mc Donalds meal at 1am. Me and my flatmate started playing in the Fifa Do Gaming League. We placed 2nd and 3rd at the end of leg 3 of our first Do Gaming League experience. We unfortunately could not go to Rage due to exams. We were sure we were some of the best Fifa players around. Still our dream of being the top players in SA in Fifa were shot down.

This year me and my buddy, finished with varsity, decided to start a Fifa gaming clan. www.bmtesports.co.za was born. Have a look at our website. Follow us on twitter. Check out our facebook page. Everything happened very fast. I placed 2nd at the Maingaming event in Canal Walk. We finished 1st at the 2upGamers event in the eGamerZA 2 vs 2 Fifa tournament. I also finished 1st at the FifaChamps tournament one day after the 2upGamers event. For the first time it felt like all of the hard work payed off for us. We felt like we have achieved something! We are going to build on this. We want to become big. We want to become the best. Please support us.

As you can see this article is the memory lane of my gaming experience...the highs and the lows. Jump in and tell your story of any of the above games :)
