Trying to get into running, but I'm super fat.

So....with all this talking about running and eating right, has to OP even started? Less talking, more doing.

In my original post I already stated I stared a week prior. I have also been eating right for the past 3 weeks. Less judging, more reading :p

Errr....more updates, less stalling.

Here's mine: I can jog 3 km's, and do a 40 minute weight training session afterwards - 6 times a week. I've also lost 6kg's since I started 6 weeks ago.

I only judge myself.

ps The tone of my reply is aggressively supportive, although it comes across as "algemene doos". Sorry about that :)

Your 'weight training' is circuit training then bud. No one can do a 3km run, and then hit the weights after for 40min of proper training. :) There is a reason why cardio is done after hitting the weights.

Anyway, mine:

I can still not run more than 500m without being extremely short of breath. It's irritating me. Yet I can cycle for 30km+ It's always been like this for some odd reason though. But will push on.

Lost 9Kg's. Probably 4Kg's fat, rest water. CM's are slowly ticking down, but clothes are not that much looser. But it should pick up from week 6 or so.

*Don't stress about your reply. I am a big boy in more ways than one.

nice dude keep it up.

Im doing a race this weekend >< not sure if im ready for it but will see

like i said in a post before. cycling 30KM + not so hard all depends on the route, speed and how much you climb.
I did the 94.7 last year with out even trying hard finished it in 3h30 this year going to push it on a road bike for 2:30 mark. Its just funny to see some people not able to do the route, yea its 100km thats far but its flat.

when running you have to constantly push to keep momentum so you work alot harder. On a bike people tend to rest on downhills and walk up the hills >< whats the point then ( not talking about walking up a mother of a hill).

Its all on the how you do the work out. If you do 20 push ups in 20minutes that no work out. Same goes for any work out. But its always good to see people working hard to get fit its hard work, i struggle to get up and train but its willpower.

Best is when you can see results in a short time more motivation as well

Would the minute run, 5 minute walk, minute run, 5 minute walk even work? Never studied the sport specifics of running. The program I found suggest this:

warm up: 5min fast pace walk
Run: 60sec
Walk: 90sec
Run: 60sec
Walk: 90sec

Yes this will work. This will get you more fit and once you are fitter, you can start chopping and changing your routine and run for longer periods. about 5 years ago I started off like that, was also moerse unfit, but started doing runs of 2 min then walk 2 min and then as I progressed, I started running faster and faster for longer periods, this will definitely work, but it will take a little longer than usual to get fit. Best to do is push yourself every day a little more and you'll see results faster.

Last year I didn't manage to get to gym at all for various reasons so got a bit unfit again, but I've now been back for 6 weeks and my first 2 weeks I started off with sprints again, just to get back into the routine. I can already feel the difference again and I'm back to running 20 minutes non stop :)

Found another nice little fitness thread.

Mean exercising for a couple months, coupled with a nice diet.

Started really slow, with treadmill at 3.5km/h for 20 minutes.

I'm at 5.5km/h for 30 minutes now, feeling a lot more healthier.

Going to start weight training real soon as I need some strength in my arms.

Its amazing how much more healthier you feel once you start exercising, that's what motivates me! When I don't exercise I feel so unfit/unhealthy and it always makes me go back

here's a tip for strengthening your arms.. start with light weights and do as many reps as possible, then drop the weight again and do max reps again.. you'll be a bit sore but it will work.

usually they suggest your starting weight should 2 weights/few kgs beneath your maximum weight that you can at least do 6 reps from. then start with that and work yourself up.

interval training is sooo good hurts but works. 5 min rest is to long if its 1min run. Like its said 60sec run 90sec walk is good.
Later recovery will be faster you would be able to do 5min run 1 min rest

That's the goal here. Would love to run 20-30min flat, but that is a way away. But will eventually get there.

I know what you mean.

I've still got to go and buy some proper weights (10 -15kg range) because the two 3kg weights that I've got at home is good if used as a paper weight lol.

Lol, back in the days when I use to live in the Platteland, we use to take dulux paint containers, fill it with cement and make our own weights haha, worked like a bomb

Well, my "circuit" training is done with free weights (dumbbells, EZ Bar, pushups, pull ups) , and has increased my muscle tone, size and strength beyond what it's ever been at.

Scooby's Workshop (youtube) states to start your training with at least 20 minutes of cardio before doing WEIGHT training. I honestly don't know where you're getting your "circuit" training comment from, but it's inaccurate at best.

But then again, I let my results speak for themselves. I don't care whether or not you refer to my training as "smurfing", as long as I can see clear results in both weight loss and muscle growth/definition.

Yeah, not too fond of bro science dude. Also cannot take a dude wearing a dickies hat seriously.

It's called a fedora. And to be honest, if you're going to take a "scientific" approach to weight loss and muscle gain, then you'll spend about R6000 in supplements a month because some "scientific study" approved it.

To me, it's about results. And that's what I'm getting - with "bro science" nogal. That's the great thing about this whole fitness thing. Every guy and his dog turns out to be an expert in the field - but the only thing that shouts louder than any of them is pure, unbiased, personal results. I've found a resource that makes sense to me, and by Crum! - it works like a charm!
