The issue is that more people watch these shows that they download... so they dont get enough money from sales.

Series don't really make their money from sales, they get rated on views when they are aired on American television. The better they are rated, the more other networks will pay for the show, therefor more seasons.

The sales do help, but whether a show is canceled or not is not really dependent on sales.

This is what I tell myself in any way, when I download series :)
 
Erm.... that doesnt make much sense :P

It is all about sales. Ratings is just a measure they use. If no stations want to buy the show it will be cancelled.

I think south africa has little affect on it... but it still makes a difference. In the US the channels make money from subscriptions, if the show isnt watched but downloaded they can it for another show that will be responsible for subscriptions and sales

I mean sales of DVDs, is not the main cash flow. Of course sales is everything, but advertising during the show, which network buys the show, etc has much more income than the DVDs. Same way movies make most of their money from cinemas, and not from DVD sales.
 
Ah. I see where the confusion lies. I thought sales of the show to networks...

More like ratings dictate how much advertisers are willing to pay to place their ads during the show. A show with 16 millions views is going to have expensive ad slots as opposed to 500 000 viewers. TV make their revenue from ads.

Well they make their money from viewership. Which requires people to actually watch the show on the network or a network they sell it to. Not on vlc ;)

Should be finish Farscape soon (about 3 quarters of the way through Season 4) and will then start with either Star Trek Next Generation or Star Trek Voyager or a massive post Xmas Mythbusters Marathon....
 
hahaha, one of those mordsiths (i think thats hows its spelt) was a south african actress, can't remember her character name now, it wasn't cara, was another one that appeared in a few episodes

Yep. 4 Seasons and a Finale Mini-Series.

Season 1 & 2 where good. 3 starting slipping and 4 has lost the plot completely. I like highly serialised shows Like Battlestar Galactica that has an Overall plot that shows in each episode. Most of Farscape's 4th season feels like filler. Guess thats why they cancelled it.
 
Been watching Spartacus - Blood and Sand. A bit jarring after the realism of the other series I'd been watching recently, but I am now enjoying the stylised imagery.

Ah that brings back good memories chasing the stone of tears etc.

Another 20 min comedy which is quite funny is Up All Night, starring Christina Applegate. Just a heads up. I'm always looking for shorts to watch with my dinner :D Oh and slightly older but hilarious is a show called Testees - not porno testees but pharmaceutical testers and the side effects of the drugs they take. So funny.

Loved the first 2 seasons. Robert is such a brilliant actor and he made the series brilliant. Havent really been engaged by the latest season. Would definitely recommend the first 2 though.
