Ubisoft admits Wii U sales drove Rayman Legends delay

In the midst of the E3 madness, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot acknowledged Rayman Legends' delay was over concern of low sales on and of Nintendo's Wii U.

"What happened was that we saw the Wii U was not going to sell enough of those games. The game is going to be fantastic, and we didn't want those creators to wind up in a position where even after making a fantastic game, they didn't sell well enough," Guillemot told VentureBeat. "We decided that we had to come out on enough machines that players can try it out on any one that they have, and give more time to both improve the game on the Wii U and create versions for the other consoles."

Low sales of Nintendo's latest console has certainly had an impact on third-party support. EA acknowledged it needs to see stronger sales to get back involved, and although Activision has Skylanders for the platform, we're still waiting for confirmation that Call of Duty: Ghosts will make it on the platform. Although, it should be noted that historically Activision's announcements of CoD on Nintendo platforms arrive later.

And how many of those will there be that aren't delayed?

Wow, you are Mr sunshine this morning aren't you? :D Most of the first-party games are exclusives to Nintendo anyway, so I doubt that they would be delayed.

Still if u look at that sheet showing the games coming out, the Wii U has drawn the short straw. I think i remember seeing 17 games unlike ps3 getting 38

17 first-party games are better in my opinion than 38 bad ports. Most of the third party games on the Wii console were horrible ports and as such failed epically. The best Wii games were the first-party ones featuring Mario, Sonic and the rest of the gang. I predict that the same will hold true for the Wii-U. Remember also that the Wii-U is capable of playing all of the Wii games. I recently bought the Wii version of DJ Hero and I'm jamming it on my Wii-U. I picked it up for dirt cheap because it's quite old now, but it's graphics is actually pleasing and it's a fun game - very similar to guitar hero.

It is quite sad to me how far Nintendo has fallen.

How is that exactly? I've never owned more Nintendo devices in my lifetime and I haven't regretted my decision to buy any of them for a second. When Nintendo sold as many consoles as Sony and MS together on the previous gen, I don't think they were really sad about that.

Hey buddy I'm in mourning over Nintendo's dismal current showing. I can't get over how badly they're stuffing up the Wii U.

Wii had 1 top shelf 1st party game in the last 2 years. One would have assumed that they were using that time to create a roster of killer 1st party games. Now FF to 6 months into the life of the Wii U and we don't have a single one. Not ONE. What are they up to over there? Is it possible that they underestimated the intensiveness of developing next-gen games to such an extent?

Yeah I read that article a couple of days ago, it sounds good though. Sounds like they are using those projects to train their staff and that will obviously cause some delays. It should make it better for future projects though.

I'm really not concerned about the games I buy hitting number 1 on the top shelf. The main stream games like COD or BF will always hit those limits and shatter them. As long as the games are fun and I get my moneys worth that's good enough for me. Nintendo definitely delivered that to me on my Wii console, and I don't expect them to fail with the Wii-U. I can understand that if you don't have any Wii games that it feels like there isn't much choice on the Wii-U, but do yourself a favour and shop around for bargains on the Wii games. There are some really awesome games out there for dirt cheap. The Wii-U is the only next-gen console that supports backwards compatibility - so use it!

Well I'm currently looking out for a Wii so that I can play some of the best games that I missed out on. I still want to beat Mario Galaxy 2, and I'll play Skyward Sword too. But Wii U needs to have some of its own AAA 1st party games before I'm interested. I'm sure it'll get them - no doubt Zelda U will be a must-have, and Pikmin3 looks amazing, and Mario Kart and Smash Bros. But it's taking its time. Anyways I'm not that negative on Nintendo, they're always just what they are. Would like to see them taking some big risks and making the same decisions that made Wii so brilliant and subversive in the early days - cutting prices right down, making a ton of fun accessible casual games.

Nintendo will need to drastically drop its price so that the console is appealing to parents come Christmas.

I would rather recommend that you try and get hold of a cheap Wii-U then and future proof yourself. If you buy a Wii now it will cost you a few hundred bucks and it won't be able to play Wii-U games, but a R2000 Wii-U will be able to play Wii games.

I think that that was Nintendo's biggest mistake. The console came out priced incorrectly, and it would have sold many more copies if it was R1000 or so cheaper. Look at how quickly the consoles disappeared at R3000 with the BT games special, and more recently at R2000 at ToysRUs and other stores. There is demand for the console, but the pricing was incorrect.

It is a delicate issue - You don't want to go too cheap - then punters will just snap it up to make a quick buck on gumtree.
