Today, Ubisoft and The Tetris Company announced a partnership to develop the iconic Tetris franchise for digital channels on Xbox One, the all-in-one games and entertainment system from Microsoft, and the Sony PlayStation4 computer entertainment system.

The Tetris franchise celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2014 and has sold hundreds of millions of units worldwide across more than 50 different platforms since its launch in 1984. Tetris-branded products are available in more than 50 languages and in 185 countries around the world. Ubisoft draws from experience in creating memorable experiences for casual gamers with licenses such as The Smurfsâ„¢ and Scott Pilgrim vs. The Worldâ„¢, as well as the recent announcement of a partnership with Hasbro.

“We welcome Ubisoft to the Tetris family. I am 100% sure they will develop one of the best versions of the Tetris game ever,” said Henk B. Rogers, managing director of The Tetris Company, LLC.

“We’re very excited to start working with this world-renowned brand, and can’t wait to combine Ubisoft’s expertise and all the capacities of next-gen consoles to create an exciting new Tetris experience for fans,” added Yves Guillemot, Ubisoft co-founder and CEO.

My mom might actually be excited about this generation now :P

Ooh I see it's on the PS3 as well, will have a look for it. A dumb yet addictive game.

They gonna have to make the game pretty awesome to take advantage of the PS4/Xbone hardware

A dumb yet addictive game.

I disagree! This game takes a hell of a lot of skill! Nothing dumb about it... I remember when i was like 10 I woke up one night and heard the TV going, there was my Mom and oldest sister jamming Tetris :D ha ha

I also like the game, but what I meant by "dumb" is that it's very straight forward.. like matching the blocks to create a full line. It's indeed very fun to play and will be getting it for my PS3. Sometimes the most simple games are the most fun

Yeah it's definitely a good time killer. I can lose hours in games like these sometimes.

Is there a console that Tetris hasn't been ported to?? Seriously that game deserves an award just for being widespread and perpetuated throughout all gaming-capable devices.

I have the PS3 version, got it specifically for my dad. Has some funky tunes and extra game modes that can make it quite interesting. My folks prefer the older ones though so it does not get much game time.

They should enhance it a lot, have the typical classic mode, then maybe a story type mode and possibly the option to play in 3d, would be a completely new gaming experience :)

I think the less they complicate it the better... Take it back to its roots, maybe make it look a bit more shiney, add some cool special effects, like when those dancers used to come out and dance for you depending on how well you did per level:D and leave it at that... The simplicity is what makes it such a winner in my opinion...

The dancer thing was great and should be brought back, however they shouldnt add complications like the ios version ie the one touch aspect is a no go!

Yeah. It's a case of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". I wouldn't mind a 3D mode though, just for variety.

Wow i spent endless hours playing this me and my sister on the old 8bit systems, we actually got it to reset back to grey lvl against the computer. i would def get this again, and teach it to my kids

The very first tetris actually had nice background music, the newer ones just don't cut it. Hoping they modernize the original songs on the new versions

I see there is a Tetris game for free won windows phones.

You even get xbox achievements, worth the watch don't you think?
