Ubisoft: It Would Be ‘Unfair’ To have The PC Version of The Division Be Too Far Ahead Of The Console

The Division looks breathtaking, but like all Ubisoft games, it has been downgraded since its initial unveil three years ago, at E3 2013. And while the PC version looks great, there is this lingering feeling that it could look better- but it doesn’t.

That is because Ubisoft doesn’t want the PC version looking too much better than the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 builds. Speaking in a video posted by Team Epiphany, a Ubisoft developer explained that

“one good thing about The Division is we’ve always considered the PC as a separate platform. I’ve worked on projects before that the PC version’s a port from a console so it carries that limitation over, but we’ve always been in the mind that we’ll have a dedicated PC build, so it hasn’t really held it back too much.

“We do have to kind of keep it in check with the consoles, because it would kind of be unfair just to push it so far away from them,” he continued. “But it’s been good having a dedicated PC build for this game. I’m really happy that we’re pushing the PC build as much as we are. There’s a lot more customized options and stuff than the console.”

The PC version of The Division looks great, don’t get me wrong- and the game itself looks like one of the best looking titles on the market currently. But my question here is, why exactly do Ubisoft worry so much about parity? Why can they simply not release a game on separate platforms, playing to each of those platforms’ individual strengths, instead of trying to hold back what can be superior builds?

The Division launches in March on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

SMH.
Chops.

Yeah, if this is going to be dumbed down graphically to appease the console owners then I'm out. Despite having major platforms to choose from, my main concern was PC (for obvious reasons). I was 50/50 about this game, now I'm more like 25/70 in favour of not getting it.

Has this not been the trend for years?

Console is inferior to mid-monster rigs; why the sudden change of heart?

Buying a console game, you know what you're in for... Buying a PC game (knowing your PC), you know what you're in for.

I only really buy console games if it's exclusive to console -- I also know what I'm getting buying it.

Tl;dr

Don't "dumb down" for fear of "inequality" ...

The beauty of a game like this is in the detail, the small things. I like to explore and navigate and investigate my surroundings. If I can't do it, I'm not interested. Especially with vaseline smeared over my glasses.

By "unfair" they actually mean they don't want the disparity to negatively affect the console sales.

This definitely isn't the way to go about it. The backlash that this is going to receive I'm sure will not be good, granted majority of it will be from Mustard Race. But from an unbiased point of view, this just doesn't make good business sense.

Ubisoft denies The Division on PC held back by consoles

"It has come to our attention that a comment from one of our team members has been perceived by some members of the community to imply the PC version of The Division was 'held back' and this is simply not true. From the beginning, the PC version of The Division was developed from the ground up and we're confident players will enjoy the game and the features this version has to offer. And the feedback from PC players who participated in the recent closed beta supports this."

Did watchdogs have a beta?

Not an open beta, we did however see the E3 Gameplay Demo, which was essentially a preview of their closed Beta.

However, we only have Ubisoft's own legacy to blame....Watch Dogs...Assassin's Creed Unity...that little drama with Far Cry 4

I just find it hard to believe they will downgrade from the Beta that the public has had access to (that didn't have any major issues that I know of in regards to performance). I can kind of understand something from E3.

what ubisoft is saying indirectly is simple

the pc version was built from the ground up, ie not a console port but we had to keep it graphically in line with the consoles to maintain graphical parity otherwise the pc version would have looked so much better and exposed the lack of processing power the current generation of consoles have.

Time will tell...

And the other 5%? Still your fence-sitting nerve kicking back and not being able to decide whether it sides with the 25% or the 70%?
