Under-appreciated and overlooked games

Didn't Castlevania get nominated for quite a few awards in Gametrailers goty? I seem to remember it for that

Totally agree with Enslaved. That game was brilliant.
And I can't possibly describe how much I love Rayman.

Sonic Generations is awesome. I'm a huge fan of the good old Sonic games and this is truly a worthy successor.

Sonic Generations is going for R199 from CNA now. Not a bad game at all. Also, Enslaved is one of the few games that had me playing it and finishing it over a weekend. Normally I would stretch it out a bit, but this one I just could not put down. Still waiting on a bargain price on Rayman Origins before I get it.

As I said to Errol and Brendon in the comment section:

It's great to hear when gamers give past games a chance, because there's so many amazing titles that slip under the radar. Lords of Shadow was unfortunately very neglected from all gamers, yet I personally found it to have better combat than God of War 3, and trumps it in every department.

Enslaved is a brilliant game, with one of the most engrossing stories. It does have it's hiccups, but I couldn't recommend it any more if you're into games such as the Prince of Persia series, or a fan of platforming/adventure titles.

Rayman Origins was, hands-down, my best game of 2011. Castlevania gives much more value than many 'mainstream' games in the genre, and Enslaved is ambitious in every department, and yeah, the ending was quite a turn, but I think it keeps you on your toes :)

@Murph wow, that stat is sad. I'm such a fan of Enslaved and excited for what Ninja Theory do with the Devil May Cry series, and it's incredibly sad that we may not see a Enslaved sequel.

I don't know about Castlevania, it got a lot of average reviews and it didn't look all that compelling in any of the preview videos. While I can't compare the combat to God of War I can say that GoW has a lot more presence and is simply much better looking on all fronts.

Yup, one of the main reasons any ideas for a sequel were shelved.
Aside from it's platforming sections, there were a handful of epic set piece moments, plus a really great ending.

Rayman was extra special in that it wasn't at all the sort of game I'd normally buy, so who knows how many great games pass you by each year purely because it doesn't fit your usual tastes.

On another note, I've been meaning to pick up Castlevania for ages.

I need to play a few of these games still. I played Enslaved's demo at rAge in 2010 and it was pretty awesome. Will get my hands on it soon. I was one of the people that avoided Sonic Generations because of Sonic Unleashed.

The reviews for Castlevania weren't all that compelling, citing some pretty hefty gameplay flaws and the main reason I never gave this a look.

There are just so many games being released all the time that it's hard to play them all. :)

Agreed, good article. And yes, I'm guilty of over looking all of those titles. Not a big sonic fan, but I'll definitly check out the other 3. You should be able to get them a bit cheaper as well now. Maybe add the best local deals on those games to the article as well.

I played probably about half of Castlevania, and it just didn't really grip me. One of the few that I started and never finished.

One that I really enjoyed, but it doesn't seem like too many people played was Vanquish

Rayman is still relatively new, so it's still cruising around at about R450.
Enslaved is R182 (and R199 at places like IC). Not so sure about Castlevania, all I've seen so far is PS3 for R350.

Damn right. The only game I've ever started at the beginning again straight after finishing it.

Enslaved's interesting boss battles also stood out for me.

To me, Rayman Origins epitomizes what many games today are lacking. Rayman proved that design is more important than graphical prowess. Dunno how you guys feel about it, but I think a well designed visual style and the fact it's implemented well into the gameplay, works better than a game with great graphics and no substance.

More articles like this will be going up a lot more often :)

I think the Enslaved demo may still be on PSN if you'd like another go at it.

If you're a true Sonic fan, one that may have swayed from the series (as I did), still give Sonic Generations a chance - it delivers on what Sonic has been lacking :)
