Unreal Engine 4 screenshot show what next-gen may look like

I put no faith in screenshots that can be photo-shopped up the wazoo. Show us some real time videos. :)

Wait, that looks an awful lot like Overlord.

I have always loved the unreal engines. But they always suited best for sci-fi games lets be honest.

Screenshots are just a tease.

The final product (random engine video clip) will reveal all truths.... :)

Chances of Epic photoshopping it is zero. It would ruin their rep instantly. They will however definitely have selected scenes & shots that are the best looking & show the best parts of the engine only.

I think the graphics of games have hit a plateau, Our eyes can only see so much graphical effects happening at a time on the screen. What REALLY needs to be focused on now that we have decent realistic graphics is.........gameplay!

Thats an awful lot of polygons for a game, should be interesting to see the engine run that at over 30 fps.

Unless everything is prerendered then it should run without any problems.

Wonder if it is going to be a match for The Euclideon Engine, with all the polygons?
Also, I assume porting to the diffferent consoles and other divices, will downgrade the graphics and polygons as well.
we will have to wait and see what happens in June with the E3!

Except for ID`s engines, Unreal engines are the best by far! Can`t wait for the new generations` works. Maybe a new MMORPG engine is needed l;ike this

The screenshots don't show much but doesn't look overly impressive so far. CryEngine 3 which isn't new had demo's looking very similar and so far seems to do a better job of photo realism if that's the way someone want's to take their graphics. One thing I would say the Unreal Engine has going for it though is on the dev side of things

Guess it will be a wait and see.

It does seem like things stalled for a while, maybe because of console popularity lately which have limited hardware with no way to upgrade.

I'm sorry, but the engine used in Rage was a load of crap. id have lost the plot and it shows in their recent work.

id Tech 5 is capable, Rage just gave it a bad reputation with good reason. The only thing I'd really criticise in it is Mega Texture, even the idea of it is flawed from the very start. Software is typically made for hardware and something like mega texture would require SSD drives to work decently and they are far from the norm in either PC or console. Also the idea of having to take so much time drawing one huge detailed texture instead of reusing textures is just stupid, it runs against saving both time and money nevermind getting into the hardware side of things.

Still id has fallen behind in the engine game since id Tech 4 but the thing is they don't care, infact they like it that way at least as far as Carmack is concerned. He never even wanted to sell engines or be in that business, though considering the amount of money and fans they had in it that was a stupid attitude to have.

Currently I'd say the engine to beat is the CryEngine and if anyone can it's Epic, though CryEngine 4 might be in the wind waiting to leapfrog Epic shortly after that happens after all CryEngine 3 has been around for about 3 years now.

In the end it's good that there are at least two engines for use as it keeps the competition going, also when every second game uses the same engine they all start to look and feel the same which is not a good thing.

Nvidia + ATI demo showcases look bad-ass as well. But their graphic cards don't seems to produce that output. Its all marketing.
