Hey all. I have been avoiding pc gaming for years and years now. I have pretty much just played games on my XBox. I just got to the point where I was tired of having to upgrade every year or two. Fast forward a few years and I feel like upgrading again hehe.

First the down low.
  1. I have a Dell Optiplex 740. http://www.dell.com/downloads/jp/products/optix/OptiPlex_740_TechSpecs_070326.pdf
  2. The box is a small form factor (slim tower basically)
  3. Dual core 2.6GHz processor (AMD as per the spec sheet)
  4. 275w power supply
  5. Using a nvidia gtx 430
  6. 6 gigs of 666MHz ram

I am hoping to do some moderate gaming on it (I mostly play MMOs) on the PC. I play my other 'real' games on my xbox. I play LOTRO on high, with some settings on ultra high but with shadows turned off and 720p resolution. Would like to play at 1080p with full gfx if possible. Also hoping to play ElderScrolls online once it is released.

I'd prefer not to throw away everything. The thing that I like about the Dell is that it is SUPER quiet, I mean SUPER quiet, which is nice as it is also my media centre.

I'd prefer to spend about R3k to R4k as any more and I would feel as though I am wasting money. hehe

Only low profile gfx cards fit in the box. Power may be an issue

For that Price rather just get a New PC and save up a little more. Otherwise I would recommend a HD7750. A Minimum of 450 Watt or greater power supply is required so I would recommend getting a new PSU as well, but if you going to do that take 4k and get a new PC.

Pentium G2020 CPU
8GB DDR3 1600
Coolermaster Elite 342
Club3D HD7750 (single slot)
Thermaltake Litepower 450W
ASRock H71 Motherboard

Should fall just over R4000 and it will be a pretty capable PC.

Thanks for the advice guys. I also considered just building a new computer but I wanted to make this a soft upgrade, i.e. hopefully without the wife noticing. :P, but I am certainly considering it.

Ahh see there you go it is a wife thing :P

Dude my parts in my pc have been changing for years :) No one knows.....

Just get the 7750 low profile and stick it in your current box.

The 7750 has no external power connectors - draws all it needs from the PCI-e port.

I have seen a HTPC run a 7750LP on a 200w psu.
