Upgrade advice

I need some upgrade advice..
I currently have the following:
Asus rampage formula motherboard (the first one)
http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-ASUS/Rampage_Formula.html
E8500 CPU
8 gig ram (800mhz DDR2)
ATI Radeon 4870x2 Screencard with the arctic cooler cooling mod.

Now I know my system is getting rather dated , the CPU upgrade options are rather slim.

Would you guys recon its worth forking out for a extreme edition CPU ?
Or rather get a new motherboard ?

Lets say my motherboard & CPU budget is R5000 right now ,
what would the best value for money be ?
Stick with Intel ? Move to AMD ?

Let me know your thoughts.

I'm also interested in thoughts on AMD as I have a Phenom II Black Edition CPU sitting here begging to be used.

Hi kerby

i think an AMD upgrade would be a good choice
further to that you doo need to move off DDR2 now :)

I'll list what i think you should try and get:

Mobo: Asus M4A88TD-M/USB3
Price: R1015
link: http://www.zapsonline.com/51907-asu...u-micro-atx-motherboard-imm4a88td-m-usb3.html

CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 945(3.0GHz)
Price: R1531
link: http://www.zapsonline.com/261-x4quadcore-cpuamd

RAM: Corsair TW3X4G1600C9D 2 x 2Gb
Price: R643
link: http://www.zapsonline.com/4gb-kits-...1600-desktop-memory-kit-frme-c2g3d16d9x2.html

Im assuming that you can re used ur PSU, HDD and Optical drive

I have noted that you have 2 GPU's

Id suggest that be upgraded an since you have only used say R3225

you have a little bit of cash left for a new GPU

this depends ofcourse if you want to game, i referenced Zaps just to make it abit symplistic.

Ofcourse you could go and swap out that X4 for an x6 which is about +- R2000

Cheers :)

The choice is really simple. Stick with Intel and go i7 2600k + an ASUS P8P67 range motherboard which shouldn't put you back more than R5000. You will not be disappointed, especially not with those two AMD GPUs.

Hi Kirby,

I have a Phenom x4(3.0 Ghz) for sale only used it 8 months with MSI 790 GX Mobo, 8 gig Apacer DDR3 Ram as well as a Saphire 4890 OC edition, that you can maybe use for x fire with your current card. PM me for price and details looking for around R3000 for the lot. I upgraded to i7 earlier this year so you are welcome to PM me should you go this way.

This.

If you DO decide to go AMD, wait for the new Bulldozer chips to come out. The prices of the existing stuff should plummet.

Try sell your two GFX cards on Carbonite. But maybe don't bother with the forums and just use the chat thing. Sold my spare card (insurance payout) for cost there in less than an hour. Was great. Then get i7 as to0ken said and mobo and a new GFX card with your spare monies. Might I recommend the Asus DirectCUII GTX 560ti? Overclocks really well cuz of brilliant cooler and only costs about 2.3 from Rebeltech: http://rebeltech.co.za/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=45_51_245&products_id=6761 (When they get stock :/)

Also, I'd generally recommend using Rebeltech.co.za. His prices are the best (usually) and he gets things in quickly (unless his suppliers are out of stock)

Thanks for the upgrade advice guys..
Looks like im going to go with the i7.

Now waiting for payday.

p.s. I only have 1 card (hd4870x2 is a dual gpu card)

That card should still last you a fair while dude, all you need now is a motherfather CPU. i7 is the way to go ;)

Ok so instead of creating a new thread I thought I would use this one.
My scroll wheel on my mouse packed up yesterday so I need to get a new one. I am aiming to spend around R400 on a new one. Is there anything that anybody can recommend?
