Upgrading a new Cpu

Hi guys

I want to upgrade my Cpu currently I have a intel pentium 4 Cpu and nvidia gt440 graphics card. And the only game i play is Cod 4 the stable fps that I get is about 70 fps.

If I get my self a Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 with my nvidia gt440 2Gb graphics card will I get atleast a 200fps constant set with low settings in game please help me out. Thanks guys

What the hell do you want 200fps for, 70 is already plenty smooth.
Q8300 is rather old technology so I presume you would be getting somebodies downgrade, just be prepared that if you are wanting to game the new games you will need to upgrade again in a year or so.
Post a budget with everything you need so that we can offer some further assistance.

I think it's similar to my case, where I have a P4 and my motherboard can take up to a Q8300 only. For me upgrading was not worth it.

And SmallBalls, I think if you need 200FPS you will need to upgrade your GFX and not the CPU...

IN cod 4 my game is unplayable under 250 FPS constant.

So i feel his pain.

I have a 120 FPs monitor and if the game is running 125 fps the ame is laggy and sluggish. so you need that fps.

id recommend you get the Q8400 that is a quad core.
or Q9200

Make sure your board can handle the cpu.


This way you pretty much sort yourself out for a while.

Now you just need to save up for a proper Graphics chip and your good for the next year.

That must be wrong.... 60 FPS is pretty much 60Hz, the refresh rate of your screen. Which means that if you never drop under 60, your screen should be getting a frame to write every time it can, 60 times a second maximum. If you get a 3D screen, it will be able to write 120 frames per second, as this screen is 120 Hz.

COD MUST be reporting the frames incorrectly... look at any other games, good frame rates are often in the 50/60+ range... (obviously depending on the game).

The thing is, that if 200 FPS LOOKS slower than 300FPS, then it may very well be an incorrect reporting of frames by the game, rather than them actually landing up on your screen which can only show 60FPS(120 in your case).

I am sure the interwebs has some clarity on this... will be checking it out...

I know the feeling.

When I start moaning about how Fraps is limiting my FPS to 60, people are like, "well what fps do you usually get?" When I tell them I play at 200 fps, they go like "LOLWut? Your eyes can't even see the difference."

For me, I can see the difference. I don't know why, but it is there.

The only way I can describe it, is that playing BF3 at 200fps feels like you're playing Q3A.

I understand the technicalities and how its perceived.

cod 4 = quake engine based.

So the faster your fps the more fluid your movement.

You can feel and see the stutter of your pc when you set your fps to 125, But on 250 its all smooth.

It has different effects in game play.
125 FPS = higher jumps
250 = longer jumps

Is your Pentium 4 socket LGA775? otherwise you'll need a new Motherboard.
Looking at this: http://www.guru3d.com/article/cpu-scaling-in-games-with-quad-core-processors/3 (A GeForce 8800 Ultra was used for testing) A better CPU will render 0 positive results, perhaps rather try get a Core 2 Duo and a better GPU?
