Upgrading costs??

hhmm...

Am planning to recycle / replace my current lappy with a new one later in the year. Am looking at R30K atm, will probably be a XPS or Alienware machine.

Then upgrading my LCD, probably that 22" SBW in the specials thread @ R2200 from landmarkpc.

Then also started itching last night (thanks to TM and Joker) to upgrade my desktop pc, in the 10k-15k region.

That's all for now.

Glad we could be of service mate:D

How much are you planning on spending on upgrades for your pc this year?

Ive already spent R8000 and im probably gonna end up spending another R13 000 on building myself a new Rig.

Give a breakdown of what your upgrading to and the costs involved.
This should be interresting:D

why would any sane person spend so much on a pc ? :p

though i should add i had to buy another pc to i and my better half can co-op and so on which was in the rounds of 12K it self... but that over an upgrade i would say is more justified though.

If anything I'll probably only do a hard drive upgrade, looking at a SATA II 1TB 7200rpm internal drive. I suppose a monitor upgrade might also be in order, either a 19'' or 22'' widescreen. We'll see.

Short of unusual events such as winning the lottery, I work in 3 to 4 year cycles.

Last year was meant to be my upgrade year, but what with the trip to Cape Town I decided to let it spill over into 2009.

I bought most of my components towards the end of last year.

Case:Coolermaster CM690 [around R700]
Fans:3 additional Coolermaster 120mm fans [around R70 a pop]
CPU Cooler:OCZ Vendetta 2 [between R400 and R500]
CPU and RAM:I managed to pick up a second hand E8400 and 4x1Gb Kingston HyperX DDR2-800 for R2000.
Motherboard:ASUS P5Q at R1400 [on special] :)
Samsung DVD-ROM/RW [around R300]
Logitech Z4 2.1 speakers. [around R700]
Coolermaster Extreme Power 550W [around R500]

That's around R6300 in 2008.

This year has seen me put down just under R500 for a Razer Diamondback [a moment of madness]
I managed to track down a Force 3D AMD Radeon HD4870 for R2500.

That's around R3000 in 2009.

I don't think I shall be splurging any more on my PC this year, but if I do, I might conceivably look at getting an ASUS Xonar DX1 to replace my old Creative Audigy 2.
They are somewhat pricey though!

Damn nice brake down..I appreciate these posts!!
Nice rig aswell and the prices were all pretty much bargains!!
Great shopping on your part:D

Thank you, Joker. Yes, I do like to shop around, even if it does get a little out of hand at times. ;-)

At the time I bought my ASUS board, the price hike had already come into effective and all the other places I visited were selling them for around R1800+.

Selling one's old kit does go some way towards cushioning the damage to one's bank balance. ;-)

I think the most I ever spent on a PC was R12 000 for the one I had assembled for myself for my 30th birthday. [This was before I had the confidence to pick my own components and put a PC together on my own.]

Ive been building pc's for a long long time and I can see you seriously did some awsome shopping to get that rig for that price!!

So much for "Poor Students"

Back when I bought my beautiful Samsung 22 inch LCD, I remember seeing the same model at Incredible Connection for around R1000 more. I think that place might go out of business if pople were better informed.
