Upgrading the HDD in my PS3 tomorrow.

So I've just ordered the Seagate 2.5" SATA ST9320423AS drive. It's 320GB, 7200 rpm and has a 16mb cache. There are some great reviews on this drive and some bad ones. I suppose it's like that in general with everything. Some people will have nothing bad compliments about something whilst others cannot stop complaining about it.

Either way, I'm going to use this drive to upgrade the drive in my PS3.

I'll let you know how it goes :)

Upgrading a 360's HDD is a lot more fun and adventurous. :P

I'll upgrade my PS3's drive sooner or later. Currently fighting to keep space available on my 80gb drive.

The 7200rpm isn't really recommended for a PS3 IIRC.

Adds extra heat, but that was for the PHAT models, not sure about the slim.
Let us know how it goes

Well, my PS3 is the phat model still, and the fan comes on and stays on 3 minutes after I've switched it on, so now I'm giving it a reason to be on :) The issue with 7200 rpm hdd's in the PS3 (besides heat) was that it showed little improvements over 5400 rpm drives, but this drive also has 16mb cache PLUS the added speed...so I'm hoping this works :)

Yup any 2.5" but just to be safe use a 5400rpm, I'd rather take a smaller cache and slower speed over overheating

It is all plug n play, and really easy to install.
I've upgraded 3x PS3s with bigger drives and no problems so far. 2 phats and one slim (well, the one phat got the slim's old 250Gb drive)
.. but I used 5400rpm drives

He needs to find out of the PS3 supports a 1TB drive first. It would be silly to stick in a massive HDD into a PS3 only to find that the PS3 doesn't recognize it. Anyways, I did my upgrade last night. It took about 2 hours to do. The backup on my PS3 was about 24GB in size. It seemed to back everything. Downloaded games, save games, the lot. So my PS3 now has 300GB free space on it and it does seem to load a bit faster too :)

Silly question but what do u guys put on your ps3 hard drive? just music/movies etc?
Im sure it depends on the person but i wouldnt copy a movie or series from my pc just to watch it once. Plus thats what media streaming is for :)
maybe im missing the point :)

Demos and Trailers. Most trailers are available in 1080p format and can be up to 800mb per file. Game installs are about 3gb on average.

Well, my little brother had a 40Gb HDD and it was full from demos and game installs so I upgraded it to 200Gb for him so he never have to uninstall anything again - those game installs, demos and PSN downloads can add up... sooner than later depending on how much space you got ;)

Movies/eps I watch either through the PS3 or HTPC, depending on where I watch (bedroom/living room) - the PS3 just streams from the HTPC, so I will prolly never put movies and such on the PS3s HDD.
