Upgrading to SSD (another SSD topic)

That will considerably narrow your range of board choices, just so you know. Marvell controllers are perfectly serviceable these days, I just wouldn't use them for RAID 0 SSD arrays because chances are it'll parse the TRIM command but there's a small chance it send them through properly.

I'm getting a Crucial M500 240GB in a couple of days, Takealot's pricing was far too tempting.

Lekker! Do you at least have a proper controller for the SSD?

Yep, native SATA 6GB/s all-round thanks to AMD's SB950 Southbridge on a 970-based AM3+ board. Slightly lower overall performance than Intel's implementation, but I don't mind.

Let me know what your read and write speeds are like :)

I'm at 250MB/s write and 410MB/s read. Apparently those are "ultra fast" speeds for my crappy Marvell controller. I'm so miffed. GRRRR

You do know I have a spare MSI Z87 M Gaming and 4770K here that might be going up for sale soon... :p

Can you tell me if that will outperform my 980X CPU @ 4.2GHz? :D

I just bought a new zorst for my car....money is officially "tight". lol

Yeah it'll be faster, especially in single core applications and this chip can do 4.5Ghz no problem.

Single-core applications? No dude, I don't need that kind of power for playing minesweeper. 6 cores or NOTHING! :p

lol Well I said it would be much faster for single core apps, slightly faster in everything else. Also lets not forget full SSD Speed :P Less heat, more USB3, less power consumption and it'll rock nicely with that Ghz card (Trust me on this one :D)

Edit: Jokes aside I had a 990X many moons ago and although I think the best cpu intel ever made was the 2500K when it 1st launched, there is no denying that the chip sets and ipc has seen the biggest improvements.
This is where you'll notice the biggest difference as well bud.

oh and current boot time = 11 seconds :D

Nah it's fine man. The wife is still rocking a Q6600 :) In terms of CPU and Mobos we're pretty set. It's just the SSD speeds that is a bit of a downer, but I mean, it's still boat loads faster than my raptor RAID config. So it's a plus!

since I upgraded to my ssd load and boot times have been insane, too bad my 670 died on me.

sorting that tomorrow hopefully

The best part about a SSD, when I'm playing BF4 - I'm one of the guys with first-pick on the vehicles because my game just loads that much faster than everyone else's :)

I got a 240GB Kingston V300 SSD for my work PC on Thursday. God damn, does it make a huge difference!!!!

Not just reboot times, but once I log into Windows, I immediately get logged into Skype and get the messages. My email pops up in a second, which used to take forever! Games load in NO time(SC2 is uber fast)!

I am so getting one for my home PC now... but would like to get a 480 GB once the prices are better. Going to Europe in 2 weeks' time, perhaps I should look at what they are priced over there!

Most important factor though - does your motherboard have a proper SATA 3 controller?

That's not even something I thought about when I got my SSD a month ago. Luckily I have the Intel Z77 chipset which comes with the Intel controller which is supposed to be decent, only two SATA 3 ports though.

Oi! Lucky fish then! Yeah the Intel SATA 3 controllers are some of the best if not THE best consumer level controllers. My motherboard uses the X58 Intel Chipset, but I wasn't so lucky because at the time of going to production, Intel didn't their own native SATA3 controllers. So everyone went with Marvell 9128 chips. Which was only discovered very late after production that they suck balls and are not actually 6gb/s.

That said, I'll never, ever buy a motherboard that has a marvel controller on it - even if the "new" ones are supposedly fine. If the controllers on the motherboard are not from the same company as the core controller, I'm not interested. 3rd party controllers = bad news.

This is on a ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0, 8GB of G.Skil RAM, an AMD Athlon X3 445 and a cloned Windows 8.1 install. If I had formatted, properly aligned the drive and then installed Windows 8 from scratch then I might see slightly higher scores but for now I'm happy with things as they are. Its silent and fast.

While you're there look up the ADATA SP920. Its identical to the Crucial M500 and many SanDisk drives and performs on the same level as Intel's 530 and the Samsung 840 Evo. Being a rebrand under the ADATA name and not something else, it'll typically retail for less than MSRP because people will think that it's cheap, but it is anything but cheap!

In fact, all of the M500 drives available on Takealot are going for less than the retail price for the drives in the US and other countries. These are great prices if you're impatient.

Just did a test on y work SSD, did not score very well. II do have a SATA2 controller only though, same thing at home.

Apart from this though, I can already feel the massive speed increase. I have an SSD in my laptop as well, but this did not make the same speed difference as the SSD in my desktop made.

I will check, We use the Intel 520 SSD drives at work, they are supposed to be one of the best SSDs out there. Quite expensive, but we get preferred pricing due to our large orders of these.
