Urgent Xbox system link question

This an urgent questions - For a system link to work do I need to have the latest xbox dashboard update installed on all machines for them to link up, I know my machine is updated to the latest version but im not sure about the rest, will it work?

Did a google search and found nothing solid.
 
So to answer my own question - yes, you most definitely can system link even though the consoles are running different software versions.
 
Keep in mind that the games need to be patched to the same version. We had an issue a couple of years ago when we did a system link lan where the one person could not join the game. Eventually we figured out that his game wasn't updated yet.
