US military ends gay ban

Washington - The US military is ready to accept openly gay recruits for the first time in the country's history, officials said on Tuesday, as a judge upheld an order ending a controversial ban on homosexuals serving in the armed forces.

But the military will tell potential recruits that the so-called "don't ask, don't tell" rule could still be reinstated depending on the outcome of pending court decisions, the Pentagon said.

So we might start seeing gay soldiers in COD, MoH and Battlefield? :D :p

Seriously though, this law has never made any sense to me, especially in recent times with heterosexual people being far more open minded and accepting.

The opponents complain that this will compromise national security. Why? What is the difference if "PFC Jones" is fine to guard the white house/pentagon today, but tomorrow you find out he is gay, so he can no longer be in the army??? Makes no sense. The only way this compromises security is when officials are too narrow minded and boot out perfectly able & willing soldiers.

So who is then the bigger threat? Soldiers that are gay or homophobic leaders?

Butts to the wall gentlemen! Those tailgunners are coming for you!

lol - gay men in the military - that cracks me up. <--- see what I did there? :)

So I guess we're going from a "Don't ask, don't tell" policy to a "You can tell us, but we don't care".

Execpt for the OP this entire thread stands as a testament to how ignorant and possibly even homophobic SA still is.

To all of you cracking jokes at these people's chosen sexuality, ever stop to think how you would feel if people started alienating you because of your choses political views/religious inclinations or even choice in prefered past-time. How often do we, as gamers, complain that people herd us into a stereotype simply because we choose to play games and here you are doing exactly the same thing to someone of a certain sexuality.

Ever consider we may have homosexual people on this forum, fellow gamers, who you are alienating with these lame jokes?

@ OP: I have also never understood why this law or the banning of gay marriages or not allowing same sex couples to adopt exsists.
Massive strides has been made in religious and racial equality yet we are still so against people with differnt sexualities.

Unfortunately many South Africans are still extremely conservative. This is a large reason why South Africa is at times held back by it's people. I'm not saying everyone go nuts tomorrow and lose it, but I am saying wake up to the fact that it is 2010. Hopefully the next generation won't be as held back by conservative upbringings.

Anyway, my point with the op is, I just want someone to explain to me how being a gay soldier/pilot/marine/sailor makes you a worse or even incompetent soldier?

I think many have a misconception that gay men are all soft, feminine like men and women are the super bad ass, chicks with more chest hair than some guys. Yes, some homosexual people are like that, but you don't think you would notice them in the military? I'm willing to put money on that those guys weren't exactly falling over their feet to enlist. Gay people can be as normal, everyday as you and me. Which is why so many gays are still in the armed forces and no one is the wiser. So why now that he comes out, is he suddenly no longer a good enough soldier?

And when I refer to he, I also refer to women here.

Thats true about SA, we can only hope hey.

My Wife has a family friend who is gay, but when I met him i would never have guessed it, his husband is more femine.
Im sure any soldier enlisted did so because he wanted to serve his country and jsut coz he/she is gay doesn't change their devotion to the cause, if anything I think they possibly have a bigger devotion if you think of what they could go through if it becomes know that they are gay. The only thing that jumps to mind is possible frantinisation (spelling) I mean in the olden days there where no women soldiers coz they didn't want the men unfocused, so maybe that something thats bothering them? I dunno, since nowadays u get female soldiers.

I understand about the fraternisation thing, but like you say, today the military is co-ed? anyway. But, the leaders knowing or not knowing isn't going to change what happens. It's so freaking stupid.

So, "Cpl Green" is gay, but nobody knows. For years he has served honourably and proudly. Never an issue. Now, one day he comes out or is found out and the courts say he must go. WTF??? Just because someone is gay, doesn't mean they automatically like everyone of the same sex. What, you are heterosexual, so that means you must want to jump every womens' bones you see.

Hey i support gay folks.

More ladies for us!

Gay also means gay women. You do realise that?

I've always maintained, just because you don't like/agree/understand someone else or his choices, doesn't mean you can't respect them or at least tolerate them.

The only way I see this issue being put to bed is if some soldier wins a Medal of Horor (or some similarly prestigious(spelling) award then afterwards comes out and openly admits to being gay.

Another thing I can think of is that some of those musclebound jar heads are pretty homophobic and the last thing the military needs is a grunt not following an order or direspecting an officer because he/she is gay or if fellow soldiers assualt the gay soldier or a gay soldier assualts a straight one. It could cast the military in a bad light and with the war the last thing the military needs is bad PR.

their lives their choice, it's not my place to judge them. they got dealt a different hand in the gene stakes.

if we all persecute people based what's outside "social norms" which is sadly happening most of the time i'll gladly stand and say fuck em all.

because being overweight people view me as weird so screw em.

+100

I expect people to respect me and my chosen believes/sexuality/choice of past time so I respect other people believes/sexuality/choice of past time. But people are still too afraid of what they dont understand or whatever doesn't fall into their prescribed field of normality.

One question, what is considered normal these days and who gets to decide what is normal? It's all the eye of the beholder.

Look at history you learned at school for instance. The history we learned was written by the "winners". So we learned about how the Zulu's attacked the settlers in Natal. Or how the British were the wrong doers against the boers. Scorched earth policy etc. And today, what are they teaching todays kids at school? Somehow I expect that Dingaan and company are portrayed in a far more favourable light.

Or how Germany were the evil ones in WW2. Had Germany won and taken over Europe etc, what would world opinion then have been 50 years on?

All in all, this is a great win for the gay community and I'm happy for them. The world is always on about equality and rights, well this is a step in the right direction.

that's the question eh?

what is normal? how do you define normal?

best answer i can give. no one is normal. because everyone is different

so normality is a un attainable illusion

Also very true, what I plan on (trying to) teach my kids one day is to look at everything from both angles.

We dont even want to get into the crap they teach kids at school today.

As someone with some German blood running through my veins I always find it so funny that the history books portray the axis powers as these baby eating evil saturday morning cartoon villians and alot of people are simply too narrow minded to try and look at the bigger picture. Ever stop to consider why the Germans hated the jews and gypsies SO much? But hey I am getting off topic.

I too am glad for this step towards gay equality.

Look at the history books. The ancient Spartan soldiers were openly homosexual and at the time they were the single best fighting force on the planet, and them having intimate relations with one another is considered one of the main contributing traits. Having a strong bond with your fellow soldier will do nothing but make you and your lover/brother/friend fight harder for each other. If that bond is romantic, it just makes it all the stronger.

And look at the whole reason being gay is frowned apon in society, it's because the evil pagan Romans did it. Homosexuality isn't even mentioned in the bible itself as a bad thing, hell, Jesus himself might even have had homosexual relations.

That said...

Well I cannot respect gay people because I believe, as my Christian faith teaches, that a man or woman that chooses a same sex lifestyle is wrong and will be judged very harshly come their time of judgment. I'm not even going to comment on gay people attending church, it's actually disgusting in my opinion. That said, I tolerate the person, but I cannot respect the personal choice that he/she has made. I have to actually make a conscious effort not to treat that person completely differently.

I'm not one of those people who'll gang up and beat a gay person to death with his/her own slippers, but I believe that gayness is a sure sign that the person has abandoned all hope of faith. You'll notice more and more people are turning to atheistic views, and due to that you'll notice more and more gay people "coming out of the closet". I'm not saying if you don't believe in God that you're automatically gay, but it is a symptom and it's a sign of society slowly but surely moving away from any form of religion - because religion means that you have to abide by certain morals and rules - and why would progressive people want to be "governed" and "limited" by any form of rules and morals?

It's also those same "progressive" people that are raping and killing our family members for their TV's and Cars. Because if you don't want to abide by rules and morals, then killing people is acceptable and being "gay" is simply another choice of a person. The same "choice" a person makes when he murders someone for petty belongings.

So what am I saying? That choosing to be gay is as bad as choosing to murder someone? You're damn straight. The moral distortion of both choices are equal. Of course, you will disagree, because people of today will never accept that they're wrong, even though they've completely lost sight of what is right, and what is wrong. As long as you're "happy" with your choices in life...why should others blame you? Funny....that highjacker that just killed your wife thinks about it in the same way.

Is this for real?
