USB sound card

Hi there. I'm looking for a usb sound card.

the problem is that I can't use any internal sound cards due to my 2x gtx570 so I have to get a usb sound card

I'm using logiteh z5500 at the moment so I'm looking at anything that can do 24bit/96khz or 24bit/48khz and supports dolby digital live. I do have optical on my motherboard but dolby digital live is not supported on my motherboard.

I was looking at the following sound cards. The asus xonar u1 or the asus xonar u3. Any suggestions welcome.

Wanted to buy the Xonar U3 myself, apparently it's pretty good for what it does. Just need to wait for the Xmas bonus to roll in now. (my GTX560 takes up my other PCI slot and my PCI-E Sound Cards are just too expensive!)

Looking at specs it says: Analog Playback Sample Rate and Resolution : 48KHz @ 16bit

Having been accustomed to my Juli@ > Little Dot Mk. V > K701 setup for several years, I began testing with a rather indifferent attitude. I didn't expect the best sound, particularly considering how little there is inside, nor did I expect the worst. It is no longer, after all, the era of the ESS Maestro. Upon listening, however, I was rather surprised that it actually sounded rather good. I have quite a difficult time describing the sound of the Xonar U3, because I can't pinpoint any one particular audible sonic difference between it and ESI's Juli@. Though the DAC is only capable of directly handling audio no higher than 16-bits and 48kHz, those specifications cover the majority of what I and anyone else will listen to, and will certainly cover the needs of the casual user. Its lack of native ASIO support may also deter anyone that strains for the utmost in audio quality by means of using the clearest pathway possible, and I am in that group. Still, it will only disappoint those that manage to purchase it under the absurd pretense that it is a portable professional solution.

Games and movies are much more enjoyable thanks to the presence of the Dobly Headphone, Pro Logic IIx, and Digital Live technologies. AKG's K701 boasts one of the widest sound stages available out of any set of cans, and with the use of Dolby's tech that wide sound stage becomes so much more. These same technologies that helped Corsair's HS1 USB headset make movies much more enjoyable by making me feel more involved apply here as well, but the largest difference, mostly thanks to the K701s, is that games are incredible to play. Not only can I immerse myself visually in a game world, I can also immerse myself sonically in it. It's great fun and a huge joy that I haven't experienced in some years since I moved away from Creative's offerings with EAX. Had I been able to test the Xonar U3 in person before purchasing, using my K701s, I would have been very compelled to purchase it based solely on its gaming performance.

The U1 is the right option for what u want it for, pricing around the R350-R500 mark (depending on bundle offers), Not cheap but good.

I ordered myself the asus u1. I think R430 wasn't that bad consider that I can now use it for as long as it lasts cause it's usb and also when I want to use it on my laptop I can.

Words of warning, as I have PLENTY of wow-guildies that fell in that trap before...

Multiple applications using the sound output at the same time WILL cause really bad shit to happen.

Ex: Playing a game while using Ventrilo/Teamspeak/SteamVoice/etc.

Especially in those voice-chat apps - it causes massive spazzing, and can only be "fixed" when it spazzes by exiting the voice application and restarting it again.

Trust me, it sounds benign at first, but it gets REALLY super irritating and frustrating after about a week...

Just thought you might wanna know some of the downsides...
As you said you have no choice, due to your soundcard, I am a bit confused... could you elaborate or post a pic?

so you say I can only have either teamspeak or bf3 running not both when doing dolby digital live. That doesn't make sense.

So I have 2x 570 GTX twin frozr III in SLI and it's taking up all my slots in my pc due to the fan design so I don't have space for any internal sound card and thats why I need an external sound card.

I think you must explain to me first what you mean cause I can't understand you

The problem is not Dolby itself, it happens in regular stereo setup as well. Just more often with Dolby as it requires more bandwidth per audio channel/

What you've said is basically the core of it. Playing a game and having a voice-app active at the same time, causes massive problems with MOST of these USB soundcards.
So in essence, yes, expect some issues when using a voicechat app alongside your games.

The problem is that the USB bandwidth and latency is just not enough to pump the game's audio, along with your microphone sending and speakers receiving over the voiceclient, all at once.
Now as far as I can tell, the newer multi-thousand Rand USB3 versions might very well have solved this issue in some part. Can't be sure, I don't actually know anyone with one of those...

When the problem happens, it only affects your voicechat. People on the other end of Teamspeak/Ventrilo/etc will not hear what you're saying. All they will hear is massive distortion and sound warping.
Like I said, the only way to fix that once it happens is to exit the voice-app and re-launch it. But it will happen again really soon afterwards again anyway.

So I have the sound card (asus xonar u1) and I don't know what the problem is with you peeps. Mine works fine and my dolby digital live is awesome. I can hear the difference. The sound is a lot deeper and I tried the dolby surround sound and it works very nice. I'm using teamspeak while playing battlefield 3 online and it works. maybe you don't know how to set it up...lol.

I'm using 2x usb sound cards. 1 is the asus xonar u1 and the other is a crappy steelseries us sound card

You get some real decent external sound cards from music instrument stores too. I have a line 6 toneport. great piece of hardware.

I've heard really good things about the Asus Xonar U3. Used to be a big Creative fan back in the day, but the past coupla years they haven't produced anything worth looking at. It seems the king of mass-market sound cards these days are the Asus Xonars... popularity also means that if something DOES go wrong, the chances of you finding a solution to your problem is much larger
