Valve to flip the switch on Steam Greenlight

Well that didnt last very long...

As long as what ever they do they still support the indie guys then its cool...

i dont see why they're canning it, if it wasnt for greenlight blackmesa would probably have never made it onto steam.

Aren't they making it easier to get things onto steam now? I thought it was more going towards a system of anyone being able to get something onto steam?

I approve of it not going to a vote somehow. That just means it's a popularity contest like Idols or something, and isn't necessarily indicative of the quality of a game. Developers often "pay off" voters by giving them something in exchange for voting, so then those people will vote because they're getting something and not because they like the game.

Worse case scenario, if this somehow doesn't work out in favour of the indie developers, they could always try getting their game on GOG.com.

Valve looking to do away with Greenlight

According to Blooded Games CFO Dave Oshry and other developers who were in attendance at the Steam Dev Days event, Valve co-founder and managing director Gabe Newell had stated during the introductory address that Valve’s goal is to eventually get rid of Greenlight.

Oshry tweeted quotes from what Gabe Newell said. “Our goal is to make Greenlight go away, Not because it’s not useful, but because we’re evolving.” Oshry said that Newell had been talking about how he wanted to give developers more control over Steam and how they use the platform to promote their games.

Currently there aren’t a lot details as to why or how Greenlight will one day be removed from Steam. However earlier this week, Ridiculous Fishing developer Rami Ismail was reported as saying that he believes Valve would soon be killing Greenlight. In an article by PC Gamer which reported on a translated GameKings.tv interview featuring Ismail, he said:

“I’m thinking that because they’ve been clearing the queue at such a rapid rate, They’ve been clearing 100 games every month. . .You don’t do that because there are 100 good games on Greenlight every month. You do that because you want to get rid of everything that isn’t greenlit before you kill it, so you don’t upset developers.”
