Voip Bandwidth Usage

Hi friends

Do any of you have an estimated figure of how much bandwidth Skype / MSN uses for voice and video calls? I'm getting mixed responses from online queries.

There is an option in Skype's advanced menu to list technical details, but the lady needs to know if a 1GB P/Month 3G connection will work or whether it'll be used up in 2 sessions kinda thing.

Any info will be greatly appreciated.

My brother uses skype and according to the daily use age its about 200meg, For about an hours talk.
Also on msn this is more or less the same use age.

Damn - that's quite hectic.

Based on other info I got it's about 10KB/s which is roughly 35MB per hour. Apparently that's voice only.

What other alternative is there to a 3G option? Which will apparently be rather expensive...

Well where is she going to use it?
If she is going to use it at home why not invest in one of the uncapped options going around at the moment.

No phone line. Plus she'll be using it on a laptop wherever :/

Hey Voic Skype and MSN and stuff would be plenty for 1GB per month.... i mean taking into consideration that you dont use it every single day u know.... but i spoke to people overseas for about 3hrs including normal chat and voice and video... i used about 300-400megs wasnt too bad actually :D

Okay then 3g seems only way but make sure she only connects when she needs it I read somewhere that if it idles it still eats up your bandwidth. You could also try to limit the upload skype does by using something like netlimiter.

Just out of interest sake, I find that Ventrillo+GW uses roughly the same amount of bandwidth as BF2+In-game VOIP.

On MSN I found that the actualy file size is around about one meg per minute of recording and 3 meg per minute if you use a webcam, and thats just one way.
