Walking/Running with NPCs in Games

WTF? that is what I say every time I have to do this, I have to follow an NPC somewhere, but when I walk I'm too slow, and I loose ground and when I run I'm to fast and leave it behind! I have found this in almost very game that requires this sometime or other?
(ironically I found in Batman AA your walk is a bit too fast)

Yes, I concur... in MMO's you find this quest type often... "Escort Virgin so-and-so to the Pools of Bliss for the Cleansing drops of BadaBingBadaBoom" ... but does she want to walk fast so we can make sexy?

Hell no!

I've only had one escort quest in WoW where the NPC actually ran...

Otherwise it pisses me off endlessly

Heres a few names:

Alex in HL2.
Sydney in C&C renegade.
Mercs in Diablo 2.
Fara in PoP: Sands of Time.
Any of the escorts in Manhunt.
Meryl in MGS.
Emma in MGS2.
Who ever is on your team in Star Trek: Elite Force.
Escort missions in Assassins Creed.

GRAH! It's infuriating! But it does have it's practical reason. It's so that you can't leave them behind or that they can't outrun you.

Also in a semi related topic. In H.A.W.X. How the FUCK does a sub sonic harrier out run a hypersonic SR-71 by a margin of 5000% !?!?!?!? Seriously. I have my Jet super cruising at 4000km/h, than I see my teammate's harries blasting past me like I was standing still.

This also makes the game sorta buggy at times. If you dont follow the NPC and try and do your own stuff in game theirs often bugs. I had this problem in HL2.

Clive Barkers Jericho has the worst NPCs of any game - they're huge, they're friggin stupid and the worst part is you're totally dependant on them. So naturally they run into the line of fire and just stand there.

Oh and I've had to shoot the dog in Fallout 3 twice because it constantly got in my way.

Majesty 2 got an irritating one as you have to motivate your heroes to escort a cart... and they botch up the job at least a few times before they get it right.

morrowind has this too.. and you have to travel huge distances. would be better if you could just put npcs in your backpack, they will certainly fit.

LOL but you talking about NPCs following you, this thread is about having to follow NPCs

BTW did you notice how their following script worked?

I can't recall if it's following npc's or following you in Morrowind. I think it might be different depending on the quest.

It's the one type of quest that I avoid in games. The most annoying one I experienced was the absentminded prospector quest in wow. He walks in a small area and aggro enemies, but you have to let them hit him first, or he'll just ignore them and continue on while you are fighting.

Its even worse when they follow you, because then you have to look behind yourself all the time to see if they are still there.

Ja but you see what the game does? when you walk it leaves a virtual trail that the NPC follows to the dot, its quite funny doing a few twirls and spins and watching the NPC do the same
