Dear mygaming forumites,

My wallet got lost, it disappeared into thin air this weekend. Seriously, I have no clue where it went. No it did not get stolen... it's just gone. In any case here's my problem, first time this has ever happened to me so now I need to know what should I do about:

1. My license (This is the important one to me)
2. my cards

Who do I contact? Numbers/Websites? Is there a way to do it online? I guess with the bank it would be easier but any other way I'm not sure about. Bank is absa. That's all that comes to mind now. I'm so bummed, losing R1500 is not a nice feeling.

Thats always a shit thing to have happen to u. Don't have exact details but the procedure is generally:

Drivers license: Have to go to license department to get a new one - they'll also issue you a temporary license so the cops don't give you shit.

Cards: most importantly bank cards - call the absa helpline so they can deactivate your current card and also issue you a new one. If its not stolen it shouldn't be a big hurry but this is usually to stop people stealing from you :P

Call ABSA's "lost cards dept" of your bank ASAP to block all the cards.
Check your statements to ensure no transactions have happened since the time the wallet went missing.

Regarding your license, back to the licensing department to stand in epic queues.

Dude I hope you already phoned the bank about any credit cards & pertrol cards. They'll give you flak if you didn't cancel asap.

I have also lost my wallet twice by accidently leaving it somewhere in a shop, so first thing I did was to go to the bank to get a new card. The rest of my cards wern't priority since they were just points cards, but also lost a lot of cash in my wallets, it is quite a sad feeling you get.

This happened years ago now I make sure my wallet is on me at all times.

Also one suggestion leave your drivers Liscence on your car keys or house keys not in your wallet, since chances of losing/stolen of both keys is less than a wallet with cash and cards.

This is exactly why I don't carry money on me (except for coins).

Pay with plastic, always pay with plastic.

And the bank loves you with all the extra's u pay them :)

FNB silver cheque account. I pay R85 a month for unlimited transactions and not a cent extra, I can withdraw funds from PayPal and swipe my little card as much as I like :D

Bearing in mind that cheque accounts don't receive any interest, but hey, that's why I have the savings account extra

Yes, yes, shameless marketing on behalf of FNB but it's all just so worth it :p

I do tend to operate on a similar system.

Cheque account handles the monthly debit orders, rest of the money goes into savings account, spend on credit card (55 days interest free) - before the due date of that money (within 55 days) pay the relevant months due amount in full.

i.e I spend money on credit, pay not interest and get 1 month interest on the money I wouldve spent. Bonus :)

Anyway's R99 a month for similar service at Standard Bank - except its not unlimited.

shame, that does suck.

first is cancel ALL the cards - bank cards the most NB. call and so on. call the lost card division (or see if can do it online) and get that sorted. other cards like store cards and whatever else u may have - you also need to call / go online and get those cancelled.

ur drivers - u need to go to the police station first to tell them ur license is missing / stolen and get case number, then go to the lovely traffic department and tell them ur license is missing and then go through the process of an eye test, pay (R160 I think) and then you can get a temporary card for now..

also - to get new bank cards etc, u do need to pay for new cards. which sucks.

good luck!

Replacing a wallet is very much an expensive exercise.

I lost my wallet during the KKNK last year. The moment I realized it was stolen I called Standard Banks lost card vision which within 5 minutes had the cards cancelled.

New wallet - R250.
Bank card replacement - R93
Stek Kinekor Movie Replacement - R35
Discovery Health Replacement - FREE

Drivers I didn't get to doing yet. I just drove around with an affidavit stating it was stolen/lost/misplaced.

I eventually received a call from Standard Bank saying they have my drivers and they have my wallet etc. They said I can come pick it up, I was like.. okay. Where exactly are you guys? They said LIMPOPO. I must have sounded very confused and stunned because afterwards she asks, where are you sir? I said, Cape Town. She says "Cape Town!?!?!". So they mailed it to my local Standard Bank branch free of charge and I finally got my license back :)

You lucky son of a gun!

Thanks guys for all the help.

I believe my friend's dog got a hold of my wallet... went and dug a hole and hid it safely in there to make sure I never have to worry about it again.

Oh lucky there was everything still in the wallet or did dog chew it

I'll cry if I have to go by home affairs again after recently standing in a queue for my password that took 2 hrs and I moved about 4 steps forward :(
