I've been preaching this for so long now.. Uncapped BUSINESS account is the way to go. R100 more per month, and no shaping/throttling whatsoever. This account works well on Afrihost, btw, but not Mweb.
 
Guys...don't conclude on an ISP based on a single report.

The service level received can and does vary on a regional basis due to a number of factors on ADSL.

OP is of course right to bitch...that level of packet loss is entirely unacceptable. Just that part about AH being a write-off as a whole is imo the wrong conclusion.

(No I'm not using AH - or any ADSL provider for that matter).
 
AH went tits up round September last year, the problem wasn't resolved by December and from what I gather its still not resolved. WA has a free 1gb account, test that and u can see for urself.
 
I think the ones that affected are the coastal people because maybe of being so far from their inla d servicese as they are ased in jhb i know i had that problem with mweb
 
So many factors are not being taken into account. Your ISP will have multiple POPs (Points of Presence) if the closest POP for your ISP is in JHB and you're in CPT, guess what, your connection will suck. Then your ISP will have IPC (IP Connect) links for international connectivity, this will generally break out onto WACS, SAT3 or EASSy. Likewise being in JHB is a distinct disadvantage (with the exception being WACS), however the difference here is less noticeable than being far away from a POP. Also keep in mind that your traffic has to travel though the Telscum network to the closest IPC point to be transferred to the backhaul carrier for the ISP, then to the closest POP for the ISP, then from the ISP's POP to the next IPC to break out to an external network/international link, etc etc ect.

TLDR : While some ISPs might suck for some users, it will be awesome for others.

That's what I've got, I switched to the AH Bus Uncapped because I was getting throttled badly on WA doing around 100GB pm on a 4Mbps home uncapped account. Everything seems to work fine for me. They have an option to shape P2P traffic that you can turn on and off as well if you do want that to take a lower priority.
 
I cannot comment on AH's issues in detail (I know senior network people that work there). What I will say is that they have grown too quickly in a very short timespan and this is putting severe pressure on them to deliver. To fix what is wrong they need to spend money they don't have on infrastructure they cannot afford on a budget that is relatively flat. That is the story I have been told.

What saddens me about them is i was a loyal supporter and punter of all things AH for years. Now they have just become another FOTM...
 
It's the reality of ISPs, at some stage they reach critical mass and without significant investment in infrastructure to support growing subscriber numbers they end up having to allocate resources to the entities bringing in the most money (businesses) to ensure they have a steady cashflow. However it would be rather daft of a business to turn away revenue (in this case subscribers) simply because they don't have sufficient capacity (bandwidth, etc) to support all the users at the same time. It really ends up being a numbers game, you'll never have 100% of your users logged in and using 100% of their available capacity at any given stage. Traffic shaping is just one of the many ways in which ISPs handle traffic. Some, and I will not name them, even use transparent proxies with long cache timeouts which make it seem like your internet is lightning fast, but in reality you're just getting the data from their network and their servers saving them the cost of actually getting the data and utilizing their international bandwidth.

ISPs are really clever in the methods they use to limit data, and you'd be surprised at what information they actually collect on you and for how long they actually store said information.
 
holy fek! i can now absolutely and categorically confirm that Afrihost sucks great big donkey balls!

ever since i got my xbone, my buddies and i have had ongoing issues trying to get a stable LIVE party and game session going. we tried again tonight, and it was a friggin pain. Party chat kept disconnecting and Worms would take forever to load a lobby (with me being the host).

i eventually got gatvol and decided to test a 1GB trial WebAfrica account. what a bloody difference!! we games for about 2 hours solid, not a single blip. all along i have been suffering in silence, assuming it was a problem with LIVE or with one of my buddies. and yet, all along, it has been Afri-friggin-host!! :mad:

so tell me gents, what is the best place to get 100GB capped data from?
 
I have a capped account with AH and have no problems. Having said that I also have an uncapped account with Openweb for downloads etc. That gets throttled to death in the day while the AH is fine. I can play on either at night with no problems. My mate has the same account but lives 300km away and has endless problems with connectivity... Just saying...
 
All the home uncapped products are getting a bit crap these days it seems, people are wanting more and more bandwidth, and ISP's only have so much capacity, that's why they are trying to get Telkom to reduce their wholesale price, it's either that happens or we pay more.

Seems the real problem is with telkom not really the isp's
