Warning all gamers, don't join Afrihost.

i have a 4 mb uncapped with AH, its because of their shaping policy that we get the packet loss (300-500 ping in csgo games coz packet loss) there have been emails back and forth about it but the end result is always the same. "shaping should have no effect on any gaming" and they seem to always be investigating but never finding a solution..

I have a business uncapped account though, so there shouldn't be any shaping. I've been able to game ok but speeds have just been pretty lousy at times. Could also be congestion though.

ah you lucky bastard.. well im moving at the end of the month and i think with that move i shall also transfer.. i don't like struggling with a problem, knowing the cause but am unable to do anything about it. i love my afrihost account on every other use.. but the packet loss is ruining it for me

Considering that we get our TV through the internet, it's worth paying the extra for a business account because with home accounts, the ton of bandwidth you go through with streaming media means you easily end up getting shaped when they start enforcing the AUP. At WA, I was getting shaped only doing 100 - 120GB per month, and quite badly as well, it was pretty unusable during office hours particularly.

i do about 100-150 gb a month (and i don't even stream movies n stuff) but that R200 extra is just not worth it.. (i currently pay R600 for my account) maybe i should just try the 150 Gb capped account for a month and see if resolves my issues because like i said earlier.. I'm very happy with them.. download speeds are amazing.

Ya if you're happy with a 150GB cap, you'll almost certainly get better performance on a capped account. And these days, swapping products month to month is a piece of cake. You can probably just do it in the ClientZone.

jip i have done it on there clientzone. it easy. i think just have to do it before 25th of the month.

I am on a 4Mbps Capped account with AH. I must one of the very few that hasn't been inflicted with their nonsense. Many I have spoken to are having problems. Have they become too "fat", too complacent?
Have not been with AH for very long, but outside of a couple of days where they had acknowledged server issues early in May, I've been pretty satisfied with things.

I have a small capped account with them that I use to supplement my Telkom account. There was a stage where I was also experiencing their very up and down speeds, but since I changed my routers' DNS settings to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 (Google Pub;ic DNS I think?) as AH support suggest, things have been significantly more stable for me.

UPDATE 26 May 2015 13:50 We believe the problems clients are experiencing is DNS related. We request that affected clients reboot their routers to receive new DNS settings automatically. Clients not using dynamic DNS settings can manually change their DNS to 8.8.8.8 (Primary) and 8.8.4.4 (Secondary) which should resolve the problem.

I landed up changing my DNS to this when I got weird errors where the one second I could find a website and the next I couldn't connect to it. No problems since

I saw some messages on their website about issues with DNS servers and to use the google ones. I use UnoTelly's DNS servers though so that probably won't be an issue for me.

I made the unfortunate mistake of leaving some downloads unattended earlier last month and managed to flatten 50gb of my 60gb daytime package with WA. So I temporarily used AH account that I had, it was so shockingly bad that I bought another WA package just so that I didn't have to use AH... WOW how the mighty have fallen.

Hey Guys,

I didn't want to start a whole new thread for this, but i'm with Afrihost and I have 4mbps Uncapped line (woodstock, cape town). I basically only use it for gaming and when I actually get internet connection I get 14-20ms ping on CS:GO which is solid for me :D I can get up to 3.4mbps download speed using Ookla speed test. These are pretty decent for a 4mbps line right? NO, because I hardly ever actually have internet access! (50/50), I hate it.
I wonder if this is a router issue or if there is a real problem on my line? I have called telkom 2 times to fix my line and they say its fine.
Is there any fix that I could do from home to try and keep my internet connection up for longer? Any ideas would be appreciated :)
Thanks

Check your SNR and attenuation margins, that will give you an idea. A low SNR could result in line instability. Mine's pretty awful and sits at about 9.5 but it's stable, much lower than that and you'll experience regularly dropping.

If you log on in https://clientzone.afrihost.com/en/, then click connectivity, then click your line, there should be a Test my line button that will test your sync speeds, SNR, Attenuation, etc. Maybe you can see if there's something wrong there.

Otherwise, see if you can get a trial account or maybe just buy a prepaid bundle for testing, and see if that works. If that works fine, then the problem is probably Afrihost, but if you have the same issues on another ISP, then it's probably your line, exchange or router.

AH went tits up round September last year, the problem wasn't resolved by December and from what I gather its still not resolved. WA has a free 1gb account, test that and u can see for urself.

I agree on this, last year that time my AH signal just disappeared and I couldn't even connect or open a browser,I phoned them, emailed them, then I left them.
It's all due to them having that merger with MTN that screwed everything up.
I'm with Axxess(data) and Telkom(line+data)(yeah I know, had no choice) and I have no problems when playing online.

Folks, I'm in a tizz about all this.

I'm trying to get a line installed at my place but i need to get all my ducks in a row first.

Should I even bother starting with AH? Budget permits a 4mb uncapped line. I would mostly be playing Elder Scrolls and MKX. Might get Evolve at some point.

I have a friend who is with AH and has no problems. Then again, he is close to the exchange and probably doesn't notice much cause he's not well versed when it comes to networks and stuff. (not saying I am.) I just don't want to get caught with a kak connection/service.

We should have a poll on which ISP people prefer. That way people, like me, who don't want to make their own decisions can use the public popularity of an ISP as an answer.

It is a difficult decision to make, I went from Axxess and Mweb to WA and I have to say I am very happy with them, but then again some people have issues with them. It all depends on where you stay and who has the best service in that area.

I was with Afrihost and thought they were good. i kept assuming my LIVE and PSN woes were on the server side. then i read about this sort of issue, trialled another ISP and it was like day and night. swapped to WA and pretty happy. one of my buddies is with OW and he is thrilled, but have heard very dodgy stories about them

Is there a way of checking which ISP has the best service in specific areas? I think there might be an opportunity for a website that gives this info. kinda like price check but for internet. "Internet check" we'll be millionaires!

"Connect check"

Its fairly easy decision really. Don't go with AH! They have become the Chicken Licken of ISPs, cheap and nasty!

In fairness this probably has more to do with AH's backbone which is MTN than the company itself and if they started offering packages using IS again, heck I would even consider using them again at some point. But currently the MTN backbone is shocking, stay far away.

I have been using Web Africa for the last 7 months and they have been rock solid.
