Warning all gamers, don't join Afrihost.

Its fairly easy decision really. Don't go with AH! They have become the Chicken Licken of ISPs, cheap and nasty!

In fairness this probably has more to do with AH's backbone which is MTN than the company itself and if they started offering packages using IS again, heck I would even consider using them again at some point. But currently the MTN backbone is shocking, stay far away.

I have been using Web Africa for the last 7 months and they have been rock solid.

I have been with them over 3 years now. Started on a small capped account, swapped to uncapped and then changed back to a capped account - I havent looked back once. Plus our line is with them, so any issues we use WA to complain to Telscum. So I hardly have to deal with telscum at all.

can anyone suggest an account that works the same as their business accounts, in other words not throttling or shaping?

Jup that is true! Unfortunately my wife is a series addict... So i have to have uncapped

I am a series addict and have a capped WA account - its a 90gig account normal useage and 360 gigs between 12 and 6am - I have only once reached the capped amount - I was silly and forgot to turn off the xbox one and it downloaded big games.

How much do you pay if I may ask

With the line at WA we pay about R599 = I will rather pay that extra R200 to get a stable line - I have not been throttled once, I have been on this plan almost a year. I grab about 3 - 6 various shows per day and its really so good - my pings to EU servers for games are anything between 160 - 190ms. At all times. If you are in the Cape I find WA to be one of the better ISP's to use. Their support is amazing, they changed my account from uncapped to capped in a few minutes. You can do it via their live sales chat or phoning them.

I have just found that for gaming their line is the most stable and the capped made a huge difference in my life.

to give you an idea of my usage for this month - this is my average usage per month actually.

Ya Afrihost has been sucking lately. The business accounts were better because they shouldn't throttle you, but I think there whole network is now over congested.

agreed but who to move to know? I got like 2000 ms pings last night trying to play diablo 3.

Maybe back to Web Africa on a capped account I guess. I'll just need to pay even more now for a big enough cap.

They are apparently making changes to try get things working better, so I'll give them till the end of July, and I think that you need to give a calendar month notice, so that'll give them August as well, but if it's not better by then, I'm definitely moving again.

Moved to WebAfrica last year during the "no we don't have issues...oh enough of you are complaining? oh yes! we have issues but look at how hard we're suddenly working on them flying engineers in etc. we take care of you!" debacle. Can't say I've looked back hey...Afrihost used to be the cheapest, best support and very good quality... I think most ppl would agree with the taint that is MTN they've lost all 3 of those :/

How much do you use? I some months struggle to use up my 90gig normal cap and never use more than 1/2 of my midnight cap. I decided to pay the little bit more and get great service and a reliable stable connection

I would want at least 120GB in normal time. 150GB would be fine for me. The thing is I don't download much except for a game here and there, but I use the internet for Netflix and Hulu, so the 12-6 am thing doesn't really help me.

EDIT:

I might just move onto the 120GB + 480GB from WA, then I must just keep an eye on my usage. I was having a really bad time on WA uncapped though

Yea their uncapped was throttled to hell, but my brother uses the 90gigs and he watches EVERYTHING on netflix and never runs out of cap. The capped account has been a dream. I have not had any issues from their side, just a few telscum issues that WA was awesome enough to help me resolve. I also love the fact that they have a note on their system that I am not an idiot and that I am a gamer and know a few things about my connection and so they know that if I phone with an issue they skip the did you turn it off and on again nonsense and immediately start trouble shooting the issue properly.

To give you an idea I never buffer youtube vids - we have 3 different people watching different youtube channels at the same time, no buffering. I can game whilst people abuse youtube in our house and my latency will climb from 180 to 200ms to EU servers.

How does one go about getting THAT right. I mean I technically work FOR an ISP, and my job is to troubleshoot this stuff myself half the time, it would be great not to be treated like a village idiot when I have a line fault at home o_0

I suspect its because I tell them from the moment they pick up not to treat me like an idiot. And these guys listen to me

Well I've put in a cancellation for my afrihost account. It's just too bad lately. Thinking of the 150GB account from Axxess. Anyone using them?

Axxess is Afrihost's sister company. I'm using them, business uncapped account. Very good performance 24/7. Their capped accounts should give similar performance. Both axxess and afrihost are on the MTN backbone
