Raven Gold
Local Boy Hunter
Heres the next part In my series in butt-sexing your way to the top of the leader boards in Call of Duty 5 - World At War. Today we deal with snipers and hunting down snipers.
Sniping is just one of those things that makes you feel like your in the movie Behind Enemy Lines and a lot of the principals are the same.
The only scoped rifles I recommend for sniping are the Springfield, Mossin Nagant, M1 Garrand and the PTRS. All the other scoped rifles have a very uncomfortable recoil are are hard to use. For iron sighted rifles use anything you want except for the Springfield, it's sights aren't aligned right.
The number one tip I can give you with using snipers is this: DO NOT CAMP!!! Shoot and scoot. They will come for you, and if you scooted, you can shoot them again in the back-end as they try and look for you in the old spot.
Betties are useful, but if you keep shootin' n' scootin' they're not critical. But if you do use them, a very effective placement is to plant both of them at separate points along the same entrance, like at the bottom and top of the stairs. Someone comes running in, blows up, thinking the way is now clear, blows himself up again.
If they have the Bomb Squad perk, listen for your Betties blowing up without getting kills or for footsteps from another entrance and wait with your pistol.
As for looking for good sniper spots, sometimes it's more a matter of high cover, but it's obvious, everybody will know your there. Or zero cover, but nobody can see you or they just won't think of looking for you there.
Some examples: In the map "Break through" one of the more popular sniping locations is to go into the building at the one end of the map that has a ladder to climb and stairway to get in. Now you can go inside there, take the benefits of the cover it provides, or you can jump out the window and prone down on one the awnings. A sniper hunter will come inside there, and won't find you until he runs outside and you shoot him the back of the head. The building just across the street of that is also a good spot to climb up on the awing just outside the windows.
When you're a sniper, and you're trying to hunt down another one, try and avoid going at him head on with your own rifle. Sneak around and into his spot with a pistol and take him out at close range. If he's using Betties, just make sure you have bomb squad or check every door and corner leading up where the target is, you can usually blow a mine by leaning into a door and slowly edging in until you can see just the edge of the mine and shoot it out.
Combat snipers are a different breed. They go in and fight among everybody Else, by they either do it with a rifle or they use Overkill and carry a secondary weapon and use the rifle only at targets of opportunity. It's very effective if you're good.
One of the more important things to remember is to remain patient. Don't get hasty and shoot at everything that twitches, it's waste of ammo, if you're lucky, generally it gets you shot.
The single most useful perk as a sniper is Camouflage, it helps to keep you hidden and the best 3rd perks are either Dead silence if you plan to stalk out other snipers or Extreme Conditioning if you wanna stay highly mobile. The 1st perk depends on what you specialize in. Use Betties or Bandoleer if you wanna be a straight sniper. Use the Bazooka with a sticky grenade if you want to be a secondary tank hunter, bomb squad to hunt down other snipers, or the flame thrower for a combat sniper.
