weird problem

Hi All

I recently encountered a really weird problem that I have never come across before.

Basically, when I start up my pc, it powers up immediately but the keyboard, mouse and display remains unresponsive for a minute or two.

Once everything comes on, it hangs again at the mobo splash screen. After a while windows loads up and everything works fine. I have an ssd so waiting 5 mins for my pc to start feels like 1995 all over again :(.
When I restart the pc from within windows, it takes about 3-5 mins. At the moment I can't shutdown. Display goes off, keyboard and mouse powers down but the box stays on, all fans spinning etc.

What I've done thus far:

* tested with different ram and ram slots.
* Tested with a different hard drive.
* Tested with a different gpu.
* Tried a different psu.
* Updated bios and all drivers to the latest versions available.
* Defaulted the bios.
* Re-installed windows7 64 bit.
* Pulled out most of my hair.
* smoked a carton of cigs.

Mobo- intel DQ57TM lga1156
cpu- Intel i7 870
Ram- 4 gigs DDR3 1333
gpu- msi R9280x
psu- 550 watt coolermaster.

Any help and suggestions would be much appreciated. Finding a new 1156 board will be tricky but not impossible.
I just have a gut feeling that somehow it's a bios issue, which would explain the delay in the keyboard, mouse and display power on. I'm not certain why it wont shut down properly though. I can live with waiting a few minutes for the pc to start up but I don't want to damage components by hard resetting.

Sorry for the long post. Here's some gifs.

I've never encountered such a problem.
When you say you've tested with a different hard drive, I assume it was another boot disk, right? Because just swapping out your media drive will do squat :D

Just going by process of elimination with what you've tried already, the problem is probably with your mobo. It *could* be the CPU but I'll place my bets on some sort of motherboard problem.

Have you checked if there is new motherboard firmware available for your board? It's a long shot but I can't think of a lot of other things you haven't tried already except replacing the motherboard.

Just to make sure, the part that takes long is the POST?
Or does it takes Windows long to boot as well after POST?

Also, did the problem start after you changed something on your PC, be it either software or hardware related? Anything, like changing a harddrive from one SATA port to another, etc.

Greetings. There's more gifs where that came from.

Yes, tested with a non-ssd drive, installed windows on it.
Forgot to add updating the bios to my labour list. Mobo has the latest firmwarefrom intels site.

I'm in denial about it being the mobo. It's a schlep to replace. My son will have to miss out on his requested ben10 action figure and settle for a lucky packet for xmas.......
Kidding, I don't have kids, I'm raising this pc.

Will hold out a little longer and see if anyone else experienced this and found a fix.
Worst case scenario, I get a new board.

Do you have external USB drives plugged-in during booting? Try disconnecting them and see if the boot time improves.

Just to clarify and be more specific.

I start up and the display doesn't show anything. The box itself is on. Mouse and keyboard off.
After about 2 minutes, the display will come one and I'll see the motherboard screen, after post.
At this point, it'll hang there for another few minutes. After this screen, it's business as usual and the machine boots like it should be doing from the start.

Also, when saving and exiting bios, it'll hang here too. Last issue is that it won't shutdown.
I get the shutdown screen, display switches off and then shutdown hangs indefinitely until I have to "hard" shutdown.

No new parts added. I've tested with no usb devices plugged in (excluding keyboard and mouse).
Will try this when I get home in the morning.

1st update bios! 2. then start running through hardware pulling out bits until the problem is resolved, otherwise MB problem.

I had i problem when i turned on my pc it would come on then go off the first time, the second time it would boot fine. updated MB and it worked fine.

mmm...

Agree, I would:
- remove all ram, use one stick at a time
- flash the bios (new bios, if no change, try using an older bios)
- remove all other hardware not required
- use a ps2 mouse / kb
- Is your PC speaker connected, or are you getting any post sounds?
