We're not trying to rip gamers off, says Megarom

I didn't watch the whole thing but I don't really understand how the keep their prices low in anyway. For example, Saints Row 4 is still priced at R330 at Kalahari which is exactly the same price that I pre-ordered Saints Row 3 for a couple of years ago and the R/$ has increased by over 30% since then.

No Megarom, you are not trying to rip us gamers off, you are running a business and in turn you want to make a profit in order for all your shareholders to get a return on their investments. That is completely understandable. Unfortunately trying to sell a AAA title 3 years later for almost the same price as when it was released, well some people might see that as being ripped off.

It may be that there are special pricing deals for emerging markets. From what I understand Microsoft works that way.

There's a lot of negotiation that goes into distributors bringing the games into the country. The publisher obviously sets the price, but they must assess how the market will react to the prices and therefore try to keep things reasonable in order to make the games saleable.

Established relationships with importers/distributors such as Megarom also helps that along. Megarom takes on the risk of bringing the games in when they secure a shipment price. They must also assess if they will be able to sell enough at their price to break even and then make profit.

Retailers can be a bit of a different story though; some might keep game prices down as a marketing strategy. A signup on a shopping site is very valuable, and a smart way to get signups in a high income tech-savvy bracket is to entice gamers with good deals.

Business is about profit and competition. If your competition has a product at a better price,of cors consumers would rather buy from them.
In any business of selling any product,if a retailer purchases a product in bulk they will get it at a much lower price, and can make a huge profit on it depending what price they make the item.
So if they buy in bulk and pay like R180-R200 per item, they can sell it at twice or triple the price. We don't know how much they get it for.

I've never had an issue with game prices. New games have always been too much for me anyway but they drop in price quick enough.

I don't mind paying for a game that's going to provide me with many hours of entertainment. As the guy said, "it's a niche market" and SA has a relatively small gaming community compared to some other countries. Publishers don't bother themselves with smaller markets and then there is also our rediculus FPB rating that kinda throws a pipe in the wheellworks.

Gaming sales aren't sales anymore. R399 for a year old game on sale isn't doing the industry much.

I think they should actually come on here and speak to us, that way we can have a proper debate and not some one way conversation based on what their output is etc... It's only fair that they actually listen to their consumers and what WE have to say as well as letting us give them a piece of our opinions.

I'm not saying I'm accusing them of unfair trading and all that, I'm giving them a way of swapping ideas for a better way of selling games to us as their consumers. If their exco are willing to do that I'm all for a good chat, obviously within moderation as they will be flamed I am pretty sure of that. However I'm sure that there are some intelligent folks here who can probably supply them with some pretty good ideas if they (Megarom) are willing to put in the time to chat with us. :)

The problem is now that they have to defend themselves.

They should have kept the consumers happy while ripping them off. Not try to make consumers feel better afterwards.
