What are the Best Budget Tablets that you guys would recommend ?
That's Priced between R1000 - R2500

There so many of this imported unnamed brands 7 " and 10 " units
Then 2nd hand units from online auction and classified sites ,
and new awesome ones like the Nexus 7 which is just over the Budget but damn its Quad core processor is such a
draw but the 10" feels like a better size .

What it will be used for is general stuff , I still can't think of a exact reason to need one (cause I don't think I actually do) , its more a want .
I do know I wont be playing games on it , but social networking , movie's , Comics , odd RDP session .

(I should add the word reliable in there somewhere )

Not happening. You'll have to compromise on price or features. If you think you can get a reliable 10" brand name tablet for <2.5k then you're smoking the good stuff. For that you'll need 3x that budget.

That being said, Nexus 7 is the best fit imo. Eat less fast food, save another month & then its in your budget. ;) Esquire has good pricing on the 8gb.

This reminds me of a line from Topgear. There is no such thing a cheap and cheerful, more like cheap and painful.

My opinion don't skim the wallet for something cheap just so you get it. Either figure out why you want a tablet and then list the features you need so you know what to look for or don't get one. But don't look for a cheap one, its not gonna work right and when you do start using it, it won't be what you want cause its cheap and painful.

Go 2nd hand if your really on a budget and then wipe that thing back to factory.

Price is not too sore a point which is why the Nexus 7 made the list
Just 10" seemed a better size ,

I'm trying to justify getting one .... what do you guy's use your tablets for .

well from the lack of response I take it no one has any of the cheapy tablets

Check this video Spec wise this doesn't come close to anything like the Samsung or Asus the guy in the video is a @#$#@$ but check the unit out .

But at under R2000 is it not worth a look at.

I bought a budget Android phone once & got burned, so I'm a bit wary of budget tablets too.

I've also been eyeing the Nexus, but the lack of 3G is a deal breaker for me. Without internet access it loses its usefulness. Its like a top of the range iPad connected to 384k line. /slit wrist

I heard that intel have a new set of processors the want to release soon. They are very power efficient and apparently Microsoft is gonna use them on there tablet with a full windows 8 OS. That might prove more useful than a normal tablet.

I have a number of tablets due to our business using them extensively
While deciding on tablets I had the opportunity to test and review a few models from different manufacturers, including some of the "expendable" bottom range ones

Battery Life on the No Name Tablets is a real issue, reduced battery life, region locked App Markets and one or two other issues, including overall instability of the preloaded OS and functionality in general
I would recommend avoiding them and rather looking at a known manufacturer, with local support, instead

There are a few noteworthy contenders in the known manufacturer market, including all the usual suspect, but considering your budget I would look at the following:

The Playbook is an awesome tablet, seamlessly integrates into any BlackBerry Working environment and has a really stable OS in general (Despite Intense testing the OS never failed)
You will however only get the full functionality if you are using a BlackBerry Smart Phone
Pricing is around 2500 from selected retailers for the 16GB Model

Dell Streak 5"
One of the better Android Tablets I've tested
Great Battery Life, fairly decent performance and includes 3G Capability by means of a Sim Card
I know they retail for around 4k, but I shopped around a bit and picked up a bunch , including OtterBox Protective Casings for half that recently

I personally use iPad's but they are slightly out of your budget, although I would definately be able to recommend them to anyone

Is the internet connectivity via BIS, or can one use straight wifi etc too?

Not Blackberry .......
OK I have done a fair amount of research and while there are a few exceptions , in general cheapy is crap totally crap .
I think think I will look around the Nexus price range
or take A contract with that new Samsung Note 10.1 ( cellphone contracts :facepalm)

I will add +1 to the nexus 7. I got one last week and it is seriously awesome. Perfect size, lightning fast, loads of apps all at a great price.

Ideally you would want to go for something like the Nexus 7 but if there is no chance of extending your budget have a look at the Ainol Novo 7 Crystal, its a 4.1 JB tablet with a quad core mali and two a9's running at 1.6ghz and 1gb RAM, read good things about it, I haven't bought a tablet yet but was looking for a cheapy for pdf reading as I didn't want to blow another 3k after investing in a 13k laptop.

Havoc
Internet Connectivity on the Playbook is either through Burdged BIS or WiFi
The lack of dedicated 3G connectivity is an issue though but I suppose if you are permanently in range of WiFi AP's it won't matter too much

Yeah that is what bothers me about the Nexsus , Im out and about so Mobile internet is a huge Bonus .
Ok I am no Apple fanboi , but I have been considering it now , from fnb it works out quite worthwhile .

I prefer Android though , its just so much more you can do with it , granted half the things I have done to my DHD is just because I saw it on XDA and decided wow that would be cool , UI overhaul , CPU tweaks , Multi ROM switching , and the cool widgets

But Apple is the grand daddy despite its limitations .

How many Apple users are there here that have used android and IOS ?

I'll number along those that are tied to iOS but on occasion use the other OS's for tablets
I can honestly say, there is no contest

Yes, there is a lot you can do with your tablet if it is running Android that has NOTHING to do with the actual operating functionality of the device as a whole
The main question you have to ask yourself, when you buy a car, do you want to take it apart and put it back together, or did you buy it to drive?
If you fall into the first category, buy Android, Tweak it untill it falls over, Wipe it and Start all over, or buy an iOS device and actually USE it :)

I love that answer, but its true IOS is easier to use.

Awesome thread. I am looking at the exact same thing, Venom. GF is starting her own business and she needs something like this because she will be on the move a lot. But I also will be using it now and again, so it has to suit both our needs. I'll be keeping an eye on this thread to see where this goes, perhaps this will give me an idea of what I can expect.

I can say this though, GET A STYLUS. I have 2 lecturers both with I pads, the ones comments are illegible over the projector, the other is readable and useful.
