What are you currently reading?

Currently rereading Lord of the Silver Bow by David Gemmell from his Troy series. Great Author, sad that he died before he could finish the third book.

Yeah Gemmel was great. If you're into the whole Troy/Iliad saga you might want to give Ilium by Dan Simmons a go as well. Very interesting novel about Troy but with an SF spin.

Hoping I'm not the only avid reader here.

Currently busy with His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman, halfway through Northern Lights.

What are you reading?

Ur not the only reader out there..
I finished Northern Lights recently - really good. Currently reading The Subtle Knife, so far so good..
(did u see the movie Golden Compass - based on Northern Lights?)

also read Dan Browns books, Kathy Reichs and most Terry Pratchett books lately.

I did see the movie - wasn't very memorable though. The novel is much more intriguing.

As for Dan Brown, I think The Lost Symbol sucked ass.

I liked the movie (it was fun) but the book is way better (almost always is). Philip Pullman is an excellent author.
Lost Symbol I can barely remember now but did enjoy Angels and Demons and Da Vinci Code.

I completely agree with you there. I think that is the worst book I've read in a very long time. I think the man is a bit full of himself after all the publicity surrounding Angels and Demons and da Vinci Code.
The Lost Symbol is a badly written book, you kinda feel like some annoying wise-ass that actually isn't as smart as he thinks he is trying to convince you of something. Too many power-words like "Mystic" just proves that he is taking the gullable for a ride.
I enjoyed the first Dan Brown book I read and have read them all but after reading Lost Symbol I think the man is an asshole.

Busy reading Armand the Vampire. Going through the whole Vampire Chronicles from Anne Rice. Made the mistake the other day watching the movies. Pure crap!

Anyone know any fictional novels that are based on actual historical figures? I've read Conn Iggulden's Ghenghis khan and Julius Caesar series (highly recommended!) and loved them so preferably something along those lines.......

I am loving A Game of Thrones so far! :)

I must say, the TV series is very true to the book up until where I have read. Although, I am sure that will change.

Going to fetch the third book from Kalahari this afternoon

Have a go at David Gemmel's Troy series or his Lion of Macedon series. They are kind of loosely based on historic events and figures. I recall that he does say in the beginning that some of the people and events actually existed, the stories are not meant to be an accurate history, but rather that it's how he felt it should have happened...

I am jealous. You really are in for a treat. Reading the series for the first time is an epic experience, please keep me updated with your thoughts :) And yeah, us bookfags are generally happy with the TV adaption. While some scenes were omitted and others added, it was still something very much in line with the novel, though I'm pretty sure that GRRM writing an episode for each season has something to do with that.

I will definately do so! :)
Ah, I didn't know that he wrote episodes for the series. That's cool

I'm currently busy with The Fires of Heaven by Robert Jordan. I've read the Wheel of Time up until book 10 before but have since forgotten most of it. Hence the reason to start over and get to the new books.

So I'm going to finish His Dark Materials soon, then I'll move on to the long awaited ADWD, and afterwards I have a choice of which series I'll tackle next, but I am really, really uncertain. I've decided to choose between these:

Gunslinger - Stephen King
Magician - Raymond E. Feist
Assassin's Apprentice - Robin Hobb
His Majesty's Dragon - Naomi Novik
Wolf of the Plains (Birth of an Empire) - Conn Iggulden

I love intrigue and realistic elements of the human psyche/philosophy in my fantasy. What do?

Finished His Dark Materials. Characters were phenomenal, and the writing was excellent. The last 4 chapters had me crying a little bit because of how well Pullman manages to evoke the correct emotions in his readers. Plot-wise it wasn't that good. The big reveal and the explanations of Dust and how all the universes work together, and what the grander scheme is of all that's been discussed in the novel - whether fictional or symbolic - made certain major aspects of the story seem severely unimportant and impractical. So what every key part of the series was working to, was eventually a letdown. His Dark Materials was still better than most trilogies I've read recently, but it had so much potential to be so much greater.

Also, A Dance With Dragons Tomorrow. Fucking pinch me.

I finished Book 1 of a Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones). Absolutely loved it! I really love his writing style..very imaginative..makes me visualise the scenes very well. Just started Book 2: A Clash of Kings.

5th book coming out tomorrow you say Staple?
