What are you reading right now?

Yes, On The Great Hunt Now.

Dude. What are you doing? Stahp:D

Seriously, I'm loving this series very much (I mean a lot ) and I'll be reading The Shadow Rising once I'm done with my current Time Riders book, but damn, it's a long series. I mean, the commitment has even deterred me from trying A Song of Ice and Fire.

Has anybody picked up the new book from Tolkien, set in the last days of King Arthur?
Wondering if I should add it to my collection of Tolkien works.

nothing at the moment, got 2 unread Pratchett books on the shelf, but cant bring myself to read them

Done with City of Shadows (I want to kill Scarrow for the last sentence in the book:mad:). Anyway, I've started reading The Shadow Rising (Wheel of Time #4) by Robert Jordan.

Mostly reading Oracle stuff atm to study. It's been a while since I read a fiction book. Oh, and also some self-help books on audiobook, but I'm now trying to get hold of some more audiobooks since I got addicted to listening to them.

I'm subbed to Audible , so i get an audio book every month . Amazon has improved the service so much that you can now listen to your audiobook and it syncs with your ebook (if you have it) and vice versa. So i can listen in the car, get home and read on my kindle/tablet and it will sync to where i listened, next morning when i open audible it syncs the audio to where i read. So now i can get my fix everywhere ;-) .

How does listening to a book compare to reading it? I'm curious because I have an ebook reader with a plugin that allows me to listen vs. reading the books, and I've yet to try it out.

EDIT: diabolus, the question extends to you as well...

Wool by Hugh Howey. Good sci-fi. I'm really enjoying it but I may just move it to the back burner if I can get my hands on Deeply Odd by Dean Koontz.

Well it's different, and it depends highly on the complexity of the book as to whether you enjoy it . The great part is you tend to hear the pronunciation of names and words.

However don't confuse the ability of a gadget to read text out loud with a robotic voice with a professional narrated audiobook. The books i listen to, the narrator do the voices and accents, so you know which characters are being portrayed. Unfortunately you do get narrators that just doesn't have a great voice , but so far i've been quite impressed with the books i listened to.

The guy doing Game of Thrones narration is insanely good with all the voices , but the series is a pretty deep and complicated read, so you do feel you need to actually go read some sections , mostly so you can digest some of the content and characters.

Audio does not wait for you, unlike reading. There is some psychology research that says that you might visualize and even remember audio better than written text, something about being able to loosen up your brain to think and imagine (because you're not flipping pages or concentrating on the text) . Whether it's true, i don't know, but i must add, you know those paragraphs in the beginning of a chapter where the author tends to describe in detail an area/place/setting ? With audio i tend to picture it better, when i read it, i tend to actually skim over it .

Books like Tom Clancy/ Cussler / Dan Brown etc which are kinda "block buster" or "popcorn'ish" is amazing with audiobooks. The more sophisticated books with alot of characters , like Steven Erikson (the Malazan Empire series) requires a ton of concentration and gets tricky if you loose track of places and people. Very difficult to quickly flip back to re-read something with audiobooks.

Overall, the combination of the two is great. And trust me listening to in the car is great, especially in traffic. Now i don't feel i'm losing all this time.

You know, it really depends on the kind of book you're reading if the experience is enjoyable. I wouldn't do anything that required intense concentration as an audiobook. You need to have something where you can let the speaking sort of wash over you. Podcasts are actually the ideal medium for listening to, but I can only find a small handful that I really like (Freakonomics, Radiolab, The Talk Show with John Gruber are my 3 so far). If anyone has suggestions for more I'm quite open.

Also I agree with everything Diabolus said about audiobooks.

You'd prefer Dean Koontz to Hugh Howey? :wtf: I really enjoyed the omnibus.
