What do you guys think of GOG?

Not particularly familiar with it, but curious.

Do you think it'll compete against Steam in the long run?

Do you prefer buying on GOG or Steam

I have quite a lot of nostalgia-inducing titles I bought on GoG but i still buy everything else (read new games) on Steam. The non-DRm titles are what makes GoG attractive to me so they do not even compete with Steam in my opinion but that is because of how I use it I suppose.

Gog is nice. I like the fact that they let you play really old games on new systems. I like the fact that all their games are DRM free. GOG has a really nice client, non-invasive and easy to navigate. It has a really impressive library of games as well.

But GOG will never take on Steam directly. I the long run Steam will always be way more popular and used by 9/10 gamers. GOG only feeds on "memberberries". It doesn't really appeal to an audience younger than I'd say about 20. I guarrantee most users and activists for GOG are all older gamers with a bad case of nostalgia.

This is not to say GOG does not have a place in the gaming market. On the contrary. It provides a niche service that no other platform or service can provide. It gives games that we almost forgot about the chance to be played again. Games that Steam doesn't have.

I have some games there Caesar III, Pharaoh and Zeus.

Other than that I prefer having all my games on steam in one place. And if they go belly up in a few years so what I don't really think I need that game forever.

That is just the thing, I have all of those DRM-free installers backed up on my pc since you are not tied to their platform. So its a win-win if you ask me

I love both of them have a good selection not just old games on GOG and steam. Fav is I can buy the game once and my brothers can also then play the game. I have not tried galaxy multiplayer so can't comment on that. Will they compete with steam that I am not sure but they are doing great atm.

I'm a huge fan of GOG. My retail copy of Witcher 3 is linked to my GOG account.

Idealogically, I would prefer to buy all my games through either GOG or Humble Bundle as they offer titles DRM-free (caveat: not all Humble purchases get a DRM-free copy).

However, Steam has also demonstrated a willingness to support the South African market directly by accepting rand. Not only are games on Steam cheaper for South Africans as a result, you also don't have to pay that infernal 2.75% currency conversion fee when purchasing via credit card.

So I'm torn: do I support the platform that supports South Africa (Steam), or the one that is more pro-consumer (GOG)?

In the end pragmatism wins for me, and I usually end up buying on Steam. If I'm buying a game at launch, I try to support our local merchants as much as possible and get a retail copy.

I like GOG, I have the whole Witcher collection on it as well, they also recently started importing certain copies of Steam games you own if you link your account, not sure how the decided which ones but its nice that you get some games on both platform, the DRM free aspect of it is interesting I don't think DRM is a practical way of curbing piracy in this day and age but I do think it makes a statement to existing and potential customers.

hmm. About the same here. I've got some games on EA's platform as well, but Steam is just so centralised.

Pity. Been looking into GOG lately since I found out it's owned by the guys that made Witcher.

It's the best for all those golden oldies. Just getting a bit fed up with all these game clients though. Currently i'm running Battle.net, Origin, Wargaming game center, Uplay, Glyph, Steam and Gog galaxy.

GOG is awesome, I've been buying from them for years. Im an avid retro game fan and for them to optimise classic old games for new systems is such a good move.
