What do you need?

So when you move out what stuff do you need to live on your own?

A few things are obvious but what about those that are not?

A bed.
A microwave.
Two plate stove at least.
Minimum one pot & pan.
Table and chair.
Directions to closest laundromat.
Girlfriend/wife/female roommate
Insurance for your PC/console!!!
Basic crockery and cutlery
Fridge

Put a fair amount of cash aside for stuff you take for granted like basic household stuff e.g. dish washing liquid, Handy Andy, bog roll, etc. You'll be surprised how many of these unexpected costs crop up.

Other than that, be prepared to spend a few bucks on take-aways at first as you'll often find you don't have something you need to cook a certain dish (in which case KFC is your only option).

Well, where do you live now? Take a look around. You ideally want to replicate the living conditions to which you have become accustomed. The worst is furniture - couches in particular are expensive, although you can get a nice bed for under R2K.

I have been living with my girlfriend for 2 years, and we still don't have all the stuff we want for the house.

Pretty much everything you used to have in your room. Ontop of that (this is assuming cash flow is steady), you'll need stuff for the kitchen and bathroom. Power tools are ALLWAYS welcome. And a big box of chips each month to snack on when your bored.

towels, always have lotsa towels on hand.
and dish clothes.

in the kitchen, if you don't have a built in oven then those 2 hot plate, mini grill oven things work well,
I had one for about a year when first moved out.

I would say your biggest useful expensive is Fridge/Freezer and bed. (if you lucky you can take your own bed with you)
Depends on how much money you have to spend on furniture.
washing machines can come later, use a laundromat. couches, Tv's are all luxuries, sit on boxes :p

oh and throw a house party with as many people as you can invite, who cares if you don't like them.
and make a list of all these small things you need.

another plan is to start putting aside bars of soap, dishwashing liquid, cloths, etc from your current home :p
free shopping!

Very True. Also, put about R700 aside for electricity deposit. You'll thank yourself (and hopefully me) when you've to get it activated.

Also, a list of good pawn shops in the area you're moving to if you're moving to your own pad for the first time.
Some years ago I had to relocate to Stellenbosch for my first job. Arrived in Cape Town with only a suitcase of clothes, my guitar and ps2. I managed to furnish my place with R2500 that included a full lounge suite (!!), Samsung Plano TV, microwave, dvd player, fridge and kitchentop grill.
When I eventually stated making more money I sold most of the stuff again at a small profit and bought stuff in better condition/new. You'll be surprised when you have to cut cost to find household items what you can find at a pawnshop. As zeff as that sounds...you have to start somewhere i guess...

Everything everyone else mentioned. Also, you might want to get some curtains. I remember moving into my first flat and not having any curtains (for some reason I thought it came with the flat). I had to use towels and sheets to cover the windows.

EDIT: And since you're a gamer you're gonna need a kettle, at least one cup and a healthy supply of coffee and sugar/sweetener and cremora if you don't have a fridge.

5. curtains
6 towels
7. household cleaning supplies

and you should be fine till next month end when you can buy more stuff

Also something that I had to learn the hard way: Numbers for a plumber, handyman, nearest police station and so forth. Plus household insurance if you can.

Doom or Target (you definately gonna need that)

How old are you? Gonna stay in Kimberley?

If you are early 20`s and going to live near a university... a student commune is an excellent way to get out of the nest. Just get your own fridge! Dunno if there will be something like that in kimberley though.
