What happens when pirates play a game development simulator and then go bankrupt

Wow dude, overreact much? These guys are perfectly within their rights to do just what they want to in their game to prove a point.

It's a fun article and a cool experiment which paid off for them. Like the guy said in his article it's a one time thing because it's not every day you simulate a game design studio in a game.

I get what you are saying about other companies who might use these stats and say the reason our game failed is because this article shows that 95% of PC gamers are pirates... But we will know better than that.

People differ on the internet and its hardly an overreaction in doing so by clearly stating your opinion.

IMHO if you want to simulate a design studio then at least include that which makes it viable representation and return inclusive and not exclusive results.

It does make sense what he says though. Reason why I don't play games anymore (besides Dota2 :P) is because the games released lately are really shit. Obviously, with a few exceptions, but it's getting just as bulltwang as the mindless stuff on TV. So maybe they should really start to consider re-evaluating their ideas.

All hype and no substance basically.

Exactly dude. Most games are becoming tedious to play, and that's not fun. There's no more satisfaction or any other elements that make it worth playing. So I'll just leave it there and say I'll only be spending money on one game this year and that will probably be DotA 2. :P

I strongly disagree. There are a lot of very good games out there that I still enjoy immensely. Perhaps you are just gamed out?

No it is not the same... and herein lies the problem:

It keeps on propagating the idea that piracy is the only factor which affect sales. Why? Because they have specifically left out other things like bad design, state of the economy, saturation of the market, lack of marketing and over zealous drm.

Clearly then it is not genius by omitting other influences.
One can't just simply compare SS3, because they used the monster as a form of DRM.

It's exactly the same as Serious Sam 3. Here they used piracy as a form of DRM. It still looks to me like you haven't read the article.

To me it doesn't look like they are saying that piracy is the only factor that affect sales. I haven't played their game but I'm sure that in the game lots of things can affect your sales.

It's only the version that they put up to be pirated that effectively stops you from playing further because your games get pirated in the game. Surely you can see the irony in that and see why it's both funny and a smart original idea.

As for why their own game wasn't selling could be for a number of reasons. However by doing this stunt they have gained invaluable marketing. From the sound of it the game is selling quite well now. DRM free. I think it was pure genius. I can't see how you can think it's stupid... unless you miss the point.

+1, thought it was only me..

I tend to agree with them. The traditional powerhouses are really making lots of crap these days. I tend to enjoy the games from smaller companies much more and they come at a much better price. Indie games ftw.

Well, you guys can whinge all you like, I'm still having lots of fun. :D

As am I. I'm really having a ball playing well designed indie games and the occasional AAA game and watching people rave about Simcity etc bugs on reddit and other forums :D

For myself...

Actually no, because I have a lot less time I want to fill that time with games I like and want to play. Whatever my personal motivations is I'm sure as hell not paying for shit.

Going to be a hard time trusting some publishers again especially when their movie/trailer previews differs so much from the final product as we've been shown with Colonial Marines.

I still download games, applications, series, movies or music. I have recently done so with Dragon Blood and actually because of this it made my to buy list. So piracy in this instance or stealing as fondly called made one future sale at end of May.

I've explained my point.

May be that I'm just really looking for some nostalgic good times, you know, in "solo" games. It's not that I'm gamed out, because I still game a lot. I just play one or two games online. I don't know dude, it's just as if nothing can capture my attention/imagination for longer than 1 hour before I get bored.

I get really bored by playing games that follow the same formula over and over again. Especially shooters. I know there's a lot of cool indie games out there, I just haven't played them. It feels like you have to siff through piles of shit to get to the good ones though.

I'm with tooken on this one. I miss the complexity of the older games. Everything is so linear and straight-forward these days.

Dota 2, Arma 2 and hopefully next week EVE does it for me.

If it wasn't for this stunt, no one would of known about them. It's all about the marketing, and then capitalizing on it. The problem is it often takes a follow up or some kind of expansion to do so.

and the hype(publicity) only lasts for so long.
