Most deals of this size will include a sizable number of stock options into the buying company, making it seems that the price is much more than it actually is. I'm sure there was still money that exchanged hands, but not to the total of $5.9 billion. I'd guess that about 2/3's of the money was "paid" in bonds and stock, with the rest being put in cash payments and IP transfer valuations.
