What I think:
If you've ever had a fight with your SO because you spend too much time playing games, you might be a gamer.
If you've ever developed callouses on your thumbs or click finger, you might be a gamer.
If you've ever pawned something to buy a new AAA release, you might be a gamer.
If you've ever got into a heated debate about the merits of wired vs wireless controllers, you might be a gamer.
If your greatest life achievements are listed on Steam, you might be a gamer.
If you receive a new PC at work and the first thing you install is the Steam client, you might be a gamer.
If you don't need to install Steam because the techies already did it for you when they set up your machine, then you definitely are a gamer.

I can go on but you get the point.

To me its just really playing games and knowing more about games than the average person.

It's not really a title people sport with "pride"

I'm still happy to say I'm a gamer, it's one of my hobbies that takes up most of my time, out of all of my hobbies.

I haven't said the word Hobby in a long time

You'all are overthinking it - it's in the name "Gamer."
As in, if you game, then you're a gamer BUT now that gaming is so mainstream... you don't NEED to identify as a gamer to enjoy gaming.

I don't identify myself as a Movie Watcher because I watch movies - because so many people do it that identifying as one has become redundant. Gaming is mainstream people, it'll only become moreso in time.

PS: I'm also a gamer because I play board games. ;)

I was a gamer before it was cool.

I still load my games from stiffies because the graphics are more natural.

BAH! Noob, I load mine from old audio tapes, the psychedelic colours on the borders of the screen is.....psychedelic. :D

Tape is the only way to go for the authentic experience man, who needs graphics anyway?

(Commodore 64 days when you had to load games from tape....like installing the game everytime you want to play it....)

My take on a gamer is that they should be knowledgeable in all fields of the "scene". It's the same as someone calling themself a golfer if they only ever played put-put. You need to walk the walk and talk the talk. You need to know your RPGs from your RTSs and your sims from your arcades.

It really doesn't matter which platform you choose to game on, as a true gamer wants to experience the best the industry has to offer - and that means buying platform exclusives. You want to experience Master Chief, Nathan Drake and Total War in all their splendour, because gaming is your passion and you'd hate to be left behind.

True gamers suffer from FOMO: Fear Of Missing Out.

It would seem that there are 2 clear winners in the poll.
and i would say that it is what i would call a real gamer.
play games and love them.

Nah, that's just popular opinion on a gaming forum. I'm the only person who cited a source for the real definition of a gamer. My vote has more credibility than the other combined. :p

I think someone who is classified as a gamer shouldn't be locked to a single genre (FPS, RTS, RPG, other acronyms), they should enjoy all kinds of games

I do not think most gamers are genre-specific when it comes to gaming. There will be certain genres they will like and dislike. Unless you really find yourself taking a greater interest in one genre over all others, but essentially, a broadened mind should, IMO, enjoy many types of games. I, for example, love FPS, RPG, Racing, MMO and Life Simulation - in that order usually. But, I dislike RTS, and vehicle-based simulations.

One thing I forgot to mention, there are some gamers that only true to ONE game. Good examples are CS:GO, DOTA 2, MMORPGs and many more. I think they are rather related to "hardcore/elitist" gamers.

CS:GO, obviously professional/semi-professional gamers;
Guild Wars (the first one), requires hundreds hours (if not thousands)to max out nearly all titles, in-game kind-of 99.9% completion. Some titles hardly maxable by design, unless one plays from beginning, circa 2005-2006 up to today, nearly never missing any events. I've been there and it took about 1800 hours to get most of it, except ones that are real time sink and in-game gold sink.

Those gamers will tune their rig to game they are actively playing. Special gear for CS:GO, expensive mouse+keyboard and even special monitor! In Guild Wars, Logitech G(something) for extra macro keys in advanced gaming.

...or the Razer Naga range for MMOs. I can't imagine playing Guild Wars 2 without it!

A gamer is someone who plays for the sake of playing, a gamer generally wont go around saying "I'm a gamer" we just are... that's probably the best way to put it...

My brother's CS:Go inventory is around $500 if I remember correctly, so I guess you *could* classify him a gamer ;)
