What Steam looked like 5 years ago

2004-2011 is 7 years surely? Unless my maths teachers lied all those years. The bloody agent bastids.

I used to hate steam with a passion back then (still do a bit). Now, eh, can't really go without it anymore.

I used to be rather anti-Steam. Tried to avoid it where possible. Especially with that rather siff greenish colour it used to have. Until I bought MW2. I then realised Steam was actually a really cool idea. Allows me to chat to buddies, contains all my games in a single list that can be monitored from a single location.

Sure it has been the origin of headaches, but it's not all that frequent. The one thing that annoys me, is the offline mode. You cannot actually play single player games if you have no internet connection.

Another thing is that when there is a free-weekend on, you download the game and play it. It then seems to show that you own/play the games even if you deleted it.

Check the last screenshot, my avatar shows that I play Lead & Gold. I think I played it for a total of 5 minutes and decided to remove it with detergents.

I saw your avatar and immediately thought "OMG XeroS1x is gonna be so famous!"
But then I contained myself.

Anyone heard of Desura? It's actually looking quite promising and already fixed some annoyances steam had, for instance you can go offline and the login screen.

As my avv shows I still say it's a load of ass.

The news reading for the last homefront patch says "small" but it tells me I have to download 5 gigs.
And I can't play the game while it's downloading.
And if I want to play a non-steam game online, I have to shut down steam completely.
And if I want to reconnect, I have to leave my PC alone for half an hour.
And if I want to reconnect in ONLINE mode, another half hour.
And than I can't play anything because of the updates.
And than I just stop buying anything and everything using steamworks and decide to use torrents for all of it instead.

Yeah, (know that feeling). I look back at the release of Half-Life 2 all those years ago... I can proudly say, I was there :)

Eight years is indeed scary. wow! I remember getting Half Life 2 via Kalahari.net and swearing at dial-up for being so slow in decrypting my game files. wow. Feels like yesterday.

I love steam. The proliferation of cheaper bandwidth in South Africa along with the now famous Steam specials have established it as a gaming giant even in South Africa. The draconian decryption seems to be a thing of the past now (no gcfs for L4D1/2) and the inclusion of many Indie developers warms my heart. :) Long live steam.
