Hi All

I know this is probably going to open doors for all sorts of FanBoys but please if you don't have something productive to say then go away! :)

I am looking at upgrading my PC (well mostly replace).

What to get?

NVidia or AMD Radeon

2x Geforce 460 that I can in SLI
1x Geforce 480 can SLI Later on

OR

2x AMD Radeon 5970 Crossfire
1x AMD Radeon 6870 Can Crossfire later

Getting some info from here

AMD vs Intel
I have always been a loyal AMD fan, but these days the i7 is killing any AMD on the market. I was looking at getting the AMD Phenom X6 3.2 Black Edition.

The point is I wanna buy a new Machine, spend around R12 000 and get the best value for the money that will last me for atleast another 5 years like me current rig did.
Thus, no Hard Drives, no Screen, only bare machine.

Current Rig:
2x Geforce 8800GTS 320mb
AMD Athlon X2 5200+
4 gb DDR2 Ram

PS:
I want proper facts, fanboys stay away! :):D

Thanks Crzwaco, thats a nice breakdown. :)
I reckon the idea of getting 2x Geforce 460 1gb cards would be the answer. Or... Maybe 1 Geforce 580.... Ugh choices choices....

I think you should rather spend most of your money on getting a solid GPU. Most new Quads along with a high-end GPU should be more than suffice.

I'm also thinking of getting one of the new Nvidia cards. My next upgrade will only be a GPU, but it has to be a monster :D

Are you talking about the Phenom II x6 1090T?

I havent checked prices or anything (so this may not apply anymore)...but what I suggest is save on the 1090T and get a 1055T (which is essentially the same as 1090T), spend that money on one of your GPUs or something else....

I bought the 1055T (x6 @ 2.8Ghz) in June; was about R 1100 cheaper than 1090T. I can say it is totally worth it, I have it overclocked up to 3.5Ghz permanently (very easy overclock) and runs @ 30 degrees ingame (summer temps) but can easily go faster... Some people have overclocked the 1055T to 4.10 Ghz, while the 1090T can go up to 4.20 Ghz (talking about 4 months ago when I bought the CPU).

I am, according to a mate of mine there is only a R300 difference between the 1055T and 1090T. Have to double check though.
But I really think that the 1090T is more value for money compared to the Intel i7....

Ok cool, then the difference in money doesnt justify any more not getting the 1090T, I just got the 1055T when 1090T was R 1100 more expensive, being of the same family of CPUs, decided to take cheaper option. You will enjoy the overclocking on the CPU for sure, runs alot cooler than any other AMD cpus I had :) As for value vs money ...thats why I never even looked at i7, if I didnt have a AM3 motherboard, I would maybe have considered i5....

If you going for amd, the ASUS Crosshair 4 mobo is awesome!
As for gpu I'd either go for the gtx580 or ati 6870 whichever fits your budget best.
Personally I wont go sli/xfire at the moment, by a monster single gpu, to give you the headroom to upgrade later on.

In my experience, Nvidia cards are full of shit and unreliable, take ages to get them to work 100% then they will probably die or get artifacts a year later....

LOL I had NVidia back from Riva TNT 2... WHAT AN AWSOME CARD!!! (Back in the day).....
But im open for change. If I can get the facts that AMD Radeons are better.

Get a Gtx580,I have got the gtx480 and I am extremely happy with it,and the 580 is even better.I only buy Nvidia cards and have not had a single problem with one of them.I have owned a 9600GT,9800GTX,Gtx260,Gtx285 and now the gtx480 and zero problems.

Cheers

How much are the 580s going for hey?

About R6000,depending where you shop.I normally buy my gear from take2 and they have got an Msi in stock for R6270.Availability on these cards are not great yet,so prices will come down in the next month or so.

Cheers

As far as know around R4999 ex Vat for the 580
The 460 is around R2000

Depending on brands though.

R5000 isn't too bad for a card like that.

The memory bandwidth and bus size is quite nice :D

192.4 GB/s - 384bit. Sounds like a powerful card!

I'm really thinking about getting one of these in a few months.
